Negative Reactions Toward Religion

Maybe the title should be "Negative Reactions Toward the Gospel/Followers of a Faith/"the Righteous"...

I think this can be said of most people (religious or not) in general: people react negatively towards those who choose not to keep silent about the testimonies of their faith. It's as if everything is okay, that everyone is open-minded towards different religions and their followers, as long as those followers remain silent...as long as they disuss their beliefs during church meetings or among members of their chuch only. To be more specific, it's as if there's something taboo in talking about God and Christian beliefs. People can sit still during a discussion about Buddhism because it's seen as exotic or unreal, like a fairytale; but when it comes to God and the gospel, there's hostility and irritation.

What is it about God/the gospel/Christianity that brings out the worst in people?

Christianity has become politicalized in a way that Buddhism hasn't. Anytime you politicalize something, whether it's Christianity or anything else, you had better be prepared to discover you've created or provoked opposition to your politics.

If you think people are bad when they discuss Christianity, you should check and see how certain misguided and ignorant people discuss Islam. I assure you it is far worse.

Some of the hostility or irritation may stem from "exclusivity" claims. When you have religions that claim to have the One And Only True Path and the rest are wrong and threatened with punishment, it's bound to cause resentment. Buddhism doesn't seem to have as many theological threats, which may make discussion less hostile.
