Last night, contrary to our expectations, our daughter was born at home. Mom and baby are both doing fine. Baby is 6 lb 9 oz. She's vigorous, strong, alert, and precocious. And she's so darn cute, I can hardly stand it! Truly a blessing!

Also, my wife, for whom I already had the greatest admiration, is my new superhero. It was a 21-hour labor, including two hours pushing. Not once did she entertain the thought of medication or interventions such as oxytocin. I realize these interventions are necessary for many women, so I'm not being critical of them. I'm just in awe of this woman whose reserves of courage and strength just seemed endless, especially in comparison with me, who needed the assistance of a doula so I could take breaks. Although I made myself as useful as possible, in those last moments I could do little besides look on with a combination of admiration and guilt.

Praise God for a successful delivery!
