Hi everyone!

I'm DanishCrow, a 33 year old bird enthusiast and college student from Denmark, and also a practicioner of Forn Sidr, reconstructing belief in the norse gods and the wealth of spirits and powers found in the natural world. In my spare time, I play a lot of RPGs, arrange festivals and concerts and appreciate noble birbs.

I'm happy to be here, and will probably be found posting mostly in the heathenism and interfaith DIRs. If you're wondering about pagan norse reconstructionism, birds or anything in between, feel free to ask my anything!

Regards,
Matias.

Hi Danish Crow!

What do you think of Gods of war? The Thor movies? Good or bad depictions of Norse Mythology?

Come to think of it, what did the Germanic Tribes that fought the Romans worship? Do you know of anything that kind? How did the Germanic Gods morph into the Norse Gods?

They are just depictions. I enjoy them for some of the things they get right (for instance one might think: what is up with Heimdall being played with Idris Elba? Well, from what we know from the sagas, Heimdalls skin is, in fact, black :) ), but they are mostly just entertainment. Costumes are too pretty and classical, for one thing.

I'm not a historian, but I know for a fact that sources are very scarce, and from those we have, correct translations are hard. Those who fought the romans were pre-pantheon, so their beliefs could have revolved more around animal worship, fertility cults (before the fertility gods of the norse pantheon, people in Denmark and Iceland worshipped dried horse phalluses known as a Vølse, odds are good the Germans did something similar), and worship of the spirits of nature.

I doubt they 'morphed' as much as were created. A probable historical theory is that the Aesir (Odin, Thor, Tyr) were an actual noble family, and the vanir (Frej, Freja, Njord) were another noble family, or perhaps a serf insurrection, which could explain the stories of them being at war and settling the peace by marriages with one another.
