Well, I am an atheist: I don't have any sort of belief in God. Still, I've been going with my wife to her church fairly often and have been reading the Bible for interest.Salaam! Welcome to RF, Penguin. If I may ask, what do you mean by listing your religion as "Lapsed Atheist"?
Thanks! I've changed it to 9/10ths Penguin, the name I use on some other forums (it's a reference to Douglas Adams' The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul).I just sent you enough points to cover the name change if you still want to change your name, if not just think of it as a website-warming gift.
Hi,
I'm new too... just registered today : )
Well, I am an atheist: I don't have any sort of belief in God. Still, I've been going with my wife to her church fairly often and have been reading the Bible for interest.
So, if still self-identifying as "Catholic" but not going to church and not reading the Bible would make someone a "lapsed Catholic", then going to church and reading the Bible would make me a "lapsed Atheist". Just a bit of a joke, I guess.
Thanks! I've changed it to 9/10ths Penguin, the name I use on some other forums (it's a reference to Douglas Adams' The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul).
In the book I referred to, the main character has a dream where she explores her mind. She finds ten trunks - the first one is filled with her thoughts, childhood memories, etc., and she recognizes this as her conscious mind. She opens the other trunks to find them full of penguins. Then my favourite line in the book comes up:What is the other 1/10th, may one ask?
She had heard it said that humans are supposed only to use about a tenth of their brains, and that no one was very clear what the other nine-tenths were for, but she had certainly never heard it suggested that they were used for storing penguins.
