Thanks, all.

Yes, I had just noticed the other penguin.

Question to a mod or admin: is it possible for me to change my screen name to avoid confusion between us?

Salaam! Welcome to RF, Penguin. If I may ask, what do you mean by listing your religion as "Lapsed Atheist"?

You can change your username through the vbPlaza under the Username options. It's the first option there: "Change Username." (Cleverly named, if I dare say so myself!)

I just sent you enough points to cover the name change if you still want to change your name, if not just think of it as a website-warming gift. :)

We can still tell members apart by signatures, avatars, posting style, and the information listed about you that's displayed above every post... so don't worry about changing it if you don't want to. I don't think there is an RF policy about similar usernames, but I think I might bring it up in the suggestions subforum here.

Well, I am an atheist: I don't have any sort of belief in God. Still, I've been going with my wife to her church fairly often and have been reading the Bible for interest.

So, if still self-identifying as "Catholic" but not going to church and not reading the Bible would make someone a "lapsed Catholic", then going to church and reading the Bible would make me a "lapsed Atheist". Just a bit of a joke, I guess. ;)

Thanks! I've changed it to 9/10ths Penguin, the name I use on some other forums (it's a reference to Douglas Adams' The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul).

Ingenius solution Penguin (are there any problems in life that Douglas Adam's hasn't already answered for us?).

In the book I referred to, the main character has a dream where she explores her mind. She finds ten trunks - the first one is filled with her thoughts, childhood memories, etc., and she recognizes this as her conscious mind. She opens the other trunks to find them full of penguins. Then my favourite line in the book comes up:

She had heard it said that humans are supposed only to use about a tenth of their brains, and that no one was very clear what the other nine-tenths were for, but she had certainly never heard it suggested that they were used for storing penguins.

As for me, sometimes the 1/10th is vitriol, other times gummi bears. On occasion, I fill it with beer.
:D
