New Zealand MP "sick" of Holocaust
"I am sick and tired of hearing how many Jews got gassed," announced New Zealand Labor Party MP John Tamihere, in an interview released on Sunday.

Tamihere's comment was met with quick reaction from international groups as well as his own party, which currently holds the New Zealand premiership. In a statement issued to the press, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark described Tamihere's comments as "deeply offensive to New Zealanders" and added that "the statements are also offensive and utterly unacceptable to the New Zealand Labor Party."

The following comments from Tamihere might help

He was then put on indefinite leave by the Prime Minister when Investigate editor Ian Wishart released further comments he made during the interview, quoting the MP as saying he was sick of being made to feel guilty about the Holocaust.

Mr Tamihere alleges his words were carefully cut and sliced. He says he was talking about Maori people being bonded and anchored in grievance and victim mode.

Mr Tamihere says in that context, the conversation was about the need to move on from history.
Frankly, I agree.

My people were Roma, we call the Nazi era the "Great Devouring." We never hear of payments to Roma or their families, we never hear of them being remembered, we never hear of the sufferings of Jehovah's Witnesses, Gays, the Retarded and others all of whom perished during the Nazi period along with the Jewish people. Why?

Could it be that the Roma, the Gays, the JW's, the Mentally retarded are all comparatively powerless compared with the Jews people and could it also be that we are not in the position to make films about our suffering?

The Roma were the only other group, besides the jews, who were picked out based soley on race and that fact that they have little voice in mainstream holocaust rememberance is a tragedy.:(
