Nigeria cartoon protests kill 16​

At least 16 people have been killed in northern Nigeria during protests by Muslims over the cartoons satirising the Prophet Muhammad.

Most of the deaths occurred in rioting in Maiduguri, capital of north-eastern Borno state. One person died in similar riots in north-central Katsina state.

Witnesses said most of the dead were from Maiduguri's minority Christians. Eleven churches were also torched.

These are the first violent protests over the cartoons in Nigeria.

The country is nearly equally split between Muslims in the north and Christians.

Christian leaders in the north of the country had been quick to denounce the publication of the cartoons when the worldwide furore over them first started.​

We shouldn't think Islam is a religion of violence, because it's not, and Islam shouldn't think Christians, Kentucky Fried Chicken and the U.S. are evil because twelve Danish illustrators drew pictures of Mohammad, because they're not.

The KKK hasn't killed thousands of people over the last 4 years.

If we get into a historical mathematical battle of which civilization has killed more - Christians or Muslims, the Christians will win by orders of magnitude. Even if we begin at the time of the founding of Islam, the Christian civilization still wins, by similar orders of magnitude. So I don't think you want to tread in those waters.

What's important is what is learned. Is it ridiculous that certain Muslim communities are reacting in such a manner? Absolutely.

But what's important to understand is that the Muslims in these areas are not angry simply that there were goofy pictures of Muhammad published. They are angry because this is perceived as one more action of the West disrespecting the religion, the way of life. The problem is, what will happen next? What will be the next outrageous reaction when our culture does something that seems insignificant to us, but is highly offensive to some?
