The NYT is saying that it was probably a boosted atomic bomb, rather than an H-bomb because the explosive yield triggered was about 6 kilotons. If it was an H-bomb, the yield would've been 10+. It was a smaller yield than the bomb they exploded in 2013.

There is one hyperpower in the world today and that is the USA. The rest have massive capability to cause harm but not to win a war against the USA. The North Koreans have a very limited possibility of power projection. The development of Intercontinental missiles would change that but even those could be shot down by military forces based in South Korea while North Korea has no defence against the kind of power that could be unleashed on it whether conventional or nuclear.

War is mad but NK is no superpower and could not win one.
