Not until now, but I found this:

New Zealand city bans number 13 | The Australian

I know it's because the number 13 is considered unlucky, but I'm sure there's a joke in the story somewhere... maybe this one:

They banned the number 13 because they're only so inbred that they just have one extra finger on each hand, so they can count up to 12, but that's the limit without taking off their shoes!

hey thanks for the link, i'm looking at it right now, but i think they were serious about it, they kept saying something about tragedys happening in the city or something like that due to 13, but all will be revealed sooner or latter.

There is a lot of stigma attached to the number 13 being an unlucky number. Did you know hotels won't put in a 13th floor? Next time you're in a hotel, check the elevator buttons. It goes from 12 to 14, gaurenteed.

they mentioned that on tv as well, they said that casinos do not have a number 13 floor, and because the number 8 is considered lucky by the chinese, the bus that goes to the casino has the number 888. i think that was in sydney or something, or maybe in china somewhere.

but since when did numbers become so important?

i thinks this is an over-reaction by some people.

My experience leads me to think this is just a ploy to get publicity for the town, Eselam. They probably don't have a lot to draw people, so things like this would put them into the public consciousness. It's probably sort of like towns in Canada or the US that have the largest rubber duck, or the largest ball of string in the world in order to draw bored tourists.

that kind of explains it. it actually does explain a lot. they are probably trying to become the only or first city to have the number 13 banned or something, to pull in turists. smart thinking, but lame at the same time.

i will try to read up some more if i can, it would be a funny experice to see what they are saying about it

apparently they are going to jump from 12 to 14, which makes 14 the new 13.

stupid idea, they should just bann number 1 and 3 altogether, now thats something to be worried about.

Seriously, no one knows the story behind 13 being unlucky? It's tied to Friday the 13th, 1307, the day King Philip had the Knights Templar arrested and put to the sword or otherwise executed.

From the wiki
On Friday, October 13, 1307 (a date sometimes linked with the origin of the Friday the 13th superstition) Philip ordered de Molay and scores of other French Templars to be simultaneously arrested. The Templars were charged with numerous heresies and tortured to extract false confessions of blasphemy, which, though obtained under duress, caused a scandal in Paris. After more bullying from Philip, Pope Clement then issued the papal bull Pastoralis Praeeminentiae on November 22, 1307, which instructed all Christian monarchs in Europe to arrest all Templars and seize their assets.

I hadn't heard that one before. Most explanations I've heard relate back to Judas being the 13th apostle.

I hope word of this doesn't reach the "moral majority" here in America. Before you know it, they'll be trying to ban the number 69.

What happens when I kid turns 13? Do they disappear for a year?

In many residential homes they wont have a 13th room. One home I goes to has 13 residents and its 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,7A,8,9,10,11,12 and then with the bells it comes up as 14 not 13.

I though that Friday was unlucky on its own and 13 was unlucky and put them together means extra unlucky hence why people dont like Friday 13th...

13 apostles at the last supper is the way I know it

Friday was the day Jesus was Crucified.
