When somebody here creates an insipid thread it’s largely ignored by most members. So why is it when a new member starts creating bad threads members flock to respond?

When you get a new cell phone, you enjoy playing on it for hours.

Once you've had it for a while, it's still useful, but much less fun to play with.

Surely it's obvious. When a known or suspected jerk posts a thread, he or she is ignored, because people either have them on Ignore or think "Here we go again" and don't bother to respond. And even with sensible posters, after a while people work out what topics they tend to post about and already have a fairly good idea on what their views are.

With someone new, people are curious about the new arrival and kinder to them, to tease out what they think on a range of issues and to find out what they have to contribute.
