There are several reasons the bots don't surprise me. Its relatively easy for a programmer to write one using modern high level languages such as Ruby or Python. Foreign governments invest in data gathering, so why wouldn't they also write a bot to gather data for free. Data on forums is useful for AI projects providing data to run through, and why not gather it for free while its available? Law enforcement may be willing to purchase such data either now or in the future, so naturally there are going to be individuals and corporations gathering it. Media companies would be wise to gather all the current forum data, too. People pay to search old newspapers, so in the future people will probably pay to search through old forum data. Finally long term users of the site may be interested in getting a copy of all of the posts or at least our own posts.
