No it replaces Mathematics. Arithmetic is a sub set of maths.

Actually no, you're both wrong. It's "that boring subject at school that nobody enjoyed", and Arithmetic is a sub set of Boredom.

Because it's so much easier to do your calculations using 62.4 pounds per cubic foot of water than it is to do it using 1 kilogram per litre or 1000 kg per cubic metre.
And it just makes intuitive sense for water to freeze at 32 degrees and boil at 212. Zero degrees and a hundred degrees? Who can wrap their head around that?

:p That must be sarcasm or there is definately something wrong with you haha

The most annoying conversion for me, though, is for fuel consumption. Of course they couldn't make it a simple coefficient... it had to be a function of the inverse. However, I think the two units give a glimpse into the mindset behind them:

- L/100 km: "I've got to go this far. How much gas do I need to do it?"
- mpg: "I've got this much gas. How far can I go?!"

As a road engineer im sure it causes you endless headaches :p See we both have practical reasons to be angry with America for causing us inconvenience :)

Yeah, but even though Mohr's Circle is annoying, it's useful. I don't hold that against the Germans.

The formulas and concepts of Mohr's criterion were fine. Then he had to go and create a graphic method of demonstrating stress. Although i love Germany, this severed our relationship haha. Not really, but considering i wrote the post about an hour after an exam about mohr's circle of stress i felt it was justified :)

Do you know who is delighted that the US says zee? The English, because it reinforces the idea that you are culturally devoid. So keep it up make the British proud, of themselves :p

Another thing that annoys me is when people think England and Britain are interchangeable. That is like saying that France, Spain and Germany are all interchangeable terms!

I don't have to worry about it professionally; I just work in metric.

Where it bugs me is in car ads. Most American cars will advertise themselves as getting "XX miles per gallon". I usually have to get out my calculator to convert it to something sensible (i.e. metric).

It can be helpful to remember something about a lot of seemingly odd things that get taught in engineering and math classes: people didn't always have calculators and computers.

The graphical method is really handy if you don't have a computer but you've got a compass and a scale. Same goes for a lot of the estimation methods that they teach for different things: a lot of the time, they're intended to take something that would be crazy difficult to calculate without a computer and convert it into something "close enough" that you can do in a minute or two with a slide rule.

Maybe Scotland and Wales should form a support group with all the parts of the Netherlands that people incorrectly call "Holland". You could write a petition. :D

But wouldn't it be more like saying that France and Europe are interchangeable?

Yeah, England is part of Ireland and Britain is part of Scotland, right?

I think it would be better to just rename "American English" to "American." That way we would not have any of these lexical disputes, because the two languages would be different!

And if it hasn't been mentioned, this is not an historical moment, it's a historical moment. We don't have a silent h in American.
