I suppose you didn't pay much attention to what Palin wants to do then, and has done as governor. "Self-reliance" is a poor description. She's fond of embezzling funds, having her rivals persecuted and banning books from libraries. She's an unrepentant hawk, and thunderously ignorant about the rest of the world. And she believes the earth is 6000 years old and the "end of days" is right around the corner. And she believes in witches - not wiccans - the kind of wartish witches are responsible for all your bad luck. And you want her finger on the button.

Unbelievable. Surely the Republicans have a thinking person they could put forward.

who would that be? republican dogma frowns on thinking. thinking might lead to thoughts, and thoughts might lead to ideas, and ideas might lead to intelligence, and intelligence will lead them out of the republican party..........

I don't see any end in sight for the Republicrat domination of our country, and as long as it's going to be the same old thing, I'm not sure it matters that much who comes and goes.

That's because there is no functional difference between them. The history of the drug war and the attitude of politicians of both parties towards eminent domain, the two biggest issues directly regarding Constitutional authority of the government and the basic liberties of citizens, show that both major political parties have less regard to upholding the Constitution and hold a greater interest in personal power and monetary gain.

True - I should qualify that: they should put forward a person who is as intelligent and thoughtful as it is possible for a person to be while still being a Republican.

Only Problem is, not being born in America means he can't become the President. As a born American I'm starting to think such a rule sucks.

Yeah, Palin has shown herself to be fiscally responsible: she employed a lobbying firm to secure $27 million in federal earmarks for a town of 6,700 residents: $500,000 for a youth clinic, $900,000 for sewer repairs, $1.9 million for transportation, and $15 million for a rail project. Screw Anchorage, Wasilla is the happenin' place!

Palin turned wasting tax payer's funds into an artform. Talk about a "give away" style of fiscal irresponsibility. Rev', your "self reliance" claim goes nowhere, not unlike Palin's infamous road.

I'm making a big leap and assuming Rev' Rick is using "give away" style and "self reliance" as euphemisms for liberal and conservative. This other point nags at me to no end, and I posted on it here, but I'll copy and paste since it since it seems applicable in this thread.

California is not a bastion of liberalism; unfortunately it's much more conservative than stereotypically portrayed. We have a strong Hispanic vote which consistently votes culturally right of center, so prop. 8 was no surprise. I also cringe when I see the blue/red state criteria as some accurate barometer of political leaning. Northern California does have inordinately liberal cities; in fact the more African-American the population the more liberal the vote tends to be. So Berkley, S.F., Oakland are very liberal while the further South one goes, and the Hispanic vote increases, the conservatism does as well.

California also usually votes for the Dem's when it comes to the presidential race, but tends to lean conservative when it comes to social issues like gay marriage and immigration. California elected Ronald Reagan and Pete Wilson, George Murphy, and Sonny Bono. Not to mention our famous mayor of Carmel.

Even at Hollywood's height of so called "leftism" during the 60s, conservative pop culture stars dominated: John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Bob Hope were not only famous, they had an inordinate amount of control over studios. Power resides in the hands of the wealthy, and conservatives have traditionally been the wealthier wing; big money is usually conservative, and L.A. is a textbook example of that.

Tim Rutten does a decent job of debunking the "Hollwood is liberal" myth here.
