Olympics Medal Count

I just did a search on "Olympics 2024 medals". The results show, in part, the total gold medal count ...
  • 27 -- United States
  • 27 -- China
  • ##
  • 09 -- Germany
  • 06 -- Canada
Therefore? Based on 2024 data, the United States population is roughly 8.7 times that of Canada.

What's the point?

Those numbers are the total gold medals not the total medals

Why start a thread, & then ask what the point is?

It is legitimate to point out that the medal totals might be considered in relation to the populations of the respective countries, but the tables show what they show. If nothing else, they are indications of which flags we ought to expect to see most often among the winners.

I don't know, you're the one who chose to search for it. You could have search for medals per capita if that's what you were interested in.

Again, when not adjusted for population, what's the point?
Because national population is far from being the only factor in Olympic medal success, be that in individual events or overall totals. Traditions around current Olympic events, GDP and sport investment, different events involving multiple medals rather than just one etc. I'm not sure how you could come up with any definitive weighting method so it makes mot sense to present the raw results and let people interpret them as they wish.
