On post-and-run topics

Jaymes

The cake is a lie
Does anyone else get annoyed with hit-and-run posts? There have been no few in the past by various members, and they seem to be cropping up again. Sometimes I get so irritated with them I could just SCREAM! I mean, hello, if you're going to post something controversial expect people to want you to reply! AUGH! :banghead3

Often, I suspect that the author feels deeply about the topic, angry that it's seen as debatable, and frustrated the s/he cannot get others to see it as 'clearly' as s/he does.

I'm afraid that I am bad for that . I don't mean to upset anyone , but I often have a hard time remembering them , and then finding them again . { I have gone to my list of posts to find them when I have the time } . So I apologize , and will try to keep better track .

I could be wrong, Kreeden, but I don't think Jensa was referring to you in particular.

Jensa is referring to a habit that some members have, of posting a controversial topic in a transparent effort to prostelytize - then, when members with a dissenting view reply in the negative, the original poster disappears into the sunset, without defending his/her position.

An odious practice, to be sure - but the more often it happens, the less credibility that member has.

TVOR's right--I wasn't referring to you at all, Kreeden. I haven't even noticed any posts where you've done anything similar to what I was ranting about... I have a bit of a bad habit of posting in threads and forgetting that I've done so, as well. :)

I think the posts everyone is talking about are ones that take an extreme position, are long on rhetoric, and are short on substantive arguments. It's the intellectual equivalent of tossing a fake grenade into a crowded room and watching the people scramble for entertainment. Not good form, particularly since the thread starter often does not even intend to return to the thread.:bonk:

I don't post as often as I use to, and I am sorry about that, but I have noticed some of these threads and after reading a few posts in I can tell there's no use in even commenting because it would be useless to even address the thread starter in a lot of cases.

I hope I'm not one of them too; I do, however make a stand and try to get my point across. I don't like 'letting go' of my bone - but as the subjects I often bring up have no valid proof, I'm always going to be batting on a sticky wicket.:)

Thank you Jensa and TVOR for putting me at less . :) But I still apologize for sometimes losting track of where I post .

I think the posters are sometimes afraid that those who can debate intelligently might *gasp* win them over! and then they'd have to do something like - oh my goodness - change their views!

People hate admitting that they're wrong, and some people are downright terrified of even the possibility that that might happen.

Is your post invisible then Krypt?

Anyway, perhaps some people realise that the thread they started wasn't to their liking,
or decided it wasn't as good as a topic as thought. I know many thread ideas "come to mind" suddenly, but then the thread author usually looks back at it and says "Oh, I forgot all about that."
