Ok dude... you wanna be careful making threads like this. There are at least 3 people on this forum (probably 4 but I can't vouch for cardero) that have around 100 gig of music each....

Oh I know. But I'm not listing all of my music. Just what's currently on my iPod (its a 4 GB Nano) I have like 66 GB of music on my computer, but that's why it's what's on you mp3 player, that way we don't get posts that are all the way down the page and then some.

Shut up you ;) You know that's not the truth... first my devotion to sheep is questioned as unhealthy, now my devotion to Tool is dragged through the mud ;) I'll have you know I had my iPod on shuffle for about 3 hours today!... hey! You were there when I listened to all my random Bob Dylan tracks...

And once again you've got the better of me.

And then there are incompetent Baby Boomers like myself, who only wish they knew where to go to download some music. :(

Any suggestions?

Stuff I like:

-lots of classical, the more obscure the better (I already have the usual stuff)
-progressive rock from the 70s
-punk from the 80s
-I forgot what happened in the 90s...any suggestions?
-folk tunes from the UK (Steeleye Span is a fav)
-usual Boomer stuff like Beatles, Cream, etc.

Stuff I like my kids have foisted upon me:

Tons of stuff from Final Fantasy
A few odd Japenese pop tunes (well, they're in Japanese)
Evanescence (Fallen is a fav. I like darker stuff.)
I don't even know the names of half the stuff.

I've been so out of the music scene for so many years, I don't even know where to start again. I pretty much gave up on listening for new tunes on the radio...it's just commercials interspersed with a bit of homogenous pap...blech

But I know there's some good stuff out there, because I hear it on people's car stereos. What do you recommend?

I especially would like good music to drive to. *Not* something calming, but something with a little force to keep one awake on those 13 hours drives.

Things I mostly don't care for:

-C&W
-Hip hop/rap (too much b**ch and ho' fo' me, thanks, though I've heard some good things too. I loved "News Goo", whoever did that one.)
-Anything anyone would ever sing on American Idol <runs screaming from room>
-hair bands
- NO DISCO!!! I have a friend who loves Abba and we drove somewhere for 5 hours...I nearly died! :faint:

I've spent some time online looking for good classical sites, but they seem to have very little selection. I could hum all the parts for Handel's Water Music by memory by now...I would like something I haven't heard all the time? sheesh Especially who has 20th century composers? Are all the sites really this bad, or am I just looking in the wrong place?

I'm drowning in a sea of stuff I've heard for 40 years, and need something different.

Only place I know that has a decent selection of classical is iTunes.

If you like classical I suggest a lot of new age and classical stuff like:

E. S. Posthumous (Classical/Electronic)
Era (New Age/Chamber Choir)
Estampie (Rennassiance Classical)
Plus a lot of stuff on iTunes from random orchestras. Their selection is quite surprising. And there are a lot of modern composers with classical stuff on iTunes.
Video game and movie soundtracks (iTunes has a huge library of musical scores from films and Galbadia Hotel has every video game soundtrack you could ever think of. Newer video games have some very impressive orchestral stuff. I suggest Shadow of the Colossus and Soul Calibur 2 or 3. Excellent orchestral stuff)

I've been loking for some orchestral/electronic hybrid for years with little success. With the exception of Era and E. S. Posthumous, there's not really a lot of people who do stuff like that. :( That's why I make my own music.

Heh, just found this thread right now. Be afraid. Be very afraid. Like Chrispy, x equals the number of albums of each. And for the record, I don't own an ipod.
