One layer at a time! Or, was it, 'one lawyer at a time! I guess it depends upon what kind of onion you speak of, what kind of pickle you're in.

And always remember, red onions are the best.

Also, discard the ends of the onion immediately. The largest amount of acid is held in that part of the onion, so cutting an onion but leaving the discarded tops and tails around is a bad idea.
