That said, you also need people with enough in common so they can communicate ideas between themselves.

Yes, the two kinds along with a somewhat neutral allow the greatest benefit and growth I think. Challenging and further elucidating your own ideas and views. Forging through fire and seeing a different aspect. It makes it fun and interesting as well.

I appreciate the people who see very much opposite of the way I do, on here and elsewhere, just as much as those more like-minded. It's the beauty of individuality and endless variations at work.

Like-minded people are nice because they can validate your preconceptions but unless you have different-minded people you'll never temper and refine yourself.

There isn't just like-minded or opposite-minded, there is, the most often, somewhat-minded. We may agree with a person on one thing and totally disagree on something else.

Do we like each other because of what we agree upon or because of what we disagree about? I tend to favor people who disagree with me on a wide variety of subjects, but I am contentious by nature. There are limits to that, of course. I could never have a relationship with someone who was morally disagreeable. And people who believe themselves infallible, whether I agree with their opinions or not, are intolerably obnoxious.

Opposite-minded people make us grow. Like-minded people make us want to go on and grow.

Both are interesting situations, but it is unhealthy to be too attached to either extreme. Some alternance is desirable.
