Oprah for President?

BSM1

What? Me worry?
Well, the idea of an Oprah Winfrey run for President is a little closer to reality now. Personally , I think she is a much more likable individual than either candidate we ended up with last time. Don't know a great deal about her politics, so I'm just speaking of her on a personality level. So ,what do you think? Realistic candidate or not?

One thing we do know about her is that she evidently can put on and take the pounds at will. Considering this, commanding the oceans to recede should be in her wheelhouse.

To be fair, we’ve been heading down the road of celebrity politicians for a while: Reagan, Schwarzenegger, Franken, Ventura, Trump. They got money and name recognition which seems to matter more and more these days.

I think Trump has just showed them how easy it could be, lack of knowledge and experience be damned.

I'm sure you would say the same thing about Obama, in all fairness.

It'd be a stupid move for her IMO. Why would anyone want this. To have every aspect of her life criticized. Maybe she'll be coerced into it by thinking it's her duty or something. However, if she did and wins I suspect she'll regret every minute of it.

It's one thing for some congressman or governor to aspire to, but this would be like a big downgrade to her current lifestyle.

Obama did have a lack of experience and it showed. It has made me wary of supporting candidates with minimal political experience.

However, Obama did have much more political experience than Oprah or Trump. He was a state senator for 7 years and a US senator for 2 years. That’s 9 years of service. Furthermore, his background as a constitutional professor and community organizer, demonstrated a good relevant knowledge base and a willingness to serve.

So, no, you couldn’t say the same about Obama (that he showed how easy if could be despite lack of experience). If anything, he showed how hard it was, both because 9 years of politics was still considered too few (it was a talking point during his campaign) and because his Presidency demonstrated how lack of experience will hurt your ability to get things done. That should have been a lesson to voters, Democrats and Republicans alike.

Isn't that exactly what Trump is purported to have done?
And seriously, the first really black president and a chick to boot! I would look forward to the campaign just for the entertainment value of Trump's Twitter!

I feel like politics would harden her. I can't see her ever having to be put in the situation to where she would have to use nuclear codes, I don't know what she would do in that situation.

I do agree with you here. It may be an opportunity to go from being a loved public figure to one who is hated and criticized about every move.

I don't want the president of the US to be likable. . . I want them to be competent.

Imagine having open heart surgery, and just before you are sedated, re surgeon walks in with zero training, zero experience, and zero understanding of the cardiovascular system.

But they'll "figure it out" by just opening up your chest and pushing through by being "likable." That'll work out!

No thanks. . . I'll pass on Oprah and all other celebrities for a boring competent person with a law degree and a proven record of political experience.

This is exactly why I truly believe...

Dwayne Johnson AKA THE ROCK should run for president in the next term.

Ya know, had the election been between Sanders and Kasich, I would probably have voted for Kasich.
Not because I liked his platform better, I really liked Sanders' better than any of the others. But I thought Kasich the most competently right/center option, and competence is top of my list as well. Sanders reminded me too much of Obama.

While the first thing that comes to mind when I hear "Oprah Winfrey", is the

"And you get free stuff, and you get free stuff. You allllll get free stuff" meme, that she's known for on her talk show.

I don't have anything against her but people in the entertainment industry feel like scraping the barrel in politics. Conversely, politics in general is too over-populated by disingenuous money-grubbing con men, in which a severely intense academic background doesn't seem to humble them at all.

Who am I to say anything though

Today I heard on NPR why people want Oprah for Prez....
She's likeable, & makes impassioned speeches.

Does it even matter what policies she favors?
Or just that she can win with likeability?

I tend to think that those who voted for Trump can't be taken seriously on anything that's political.

Why?
Do you hate billionaire game show hosts with no experience?
Or is it because she's a black woman who could out play Trump in the media?

I lost so much respect for Oprah. Out one side of her mouth she goes on as she did at the Golden Globes, and on the other she was all buddy-buddy with Weinstein. Why wasn't she speaking out then?

But even before that, no. I would not vote for her or any other celebrity (except for one) that thinks they'd do a good job at president. It's ridiculous. The only "celebrity" that I'd vote for would be Stephen Colbert. He knows politics extremely well, isn't overly party-loyal, and has the capacity to speak respectfully and amicably to foreign diplomats and people in ideological opposition to him.
