Oprah for President?

Well, the idea of an Oprah Winfrey run for President is a little closer to reality now. Personally , I think she is a much more likable individual than either candidate we ended up with last time. Don't know a great deal about her politics, so I'm just speaking of her on a personality level. So ,what do you think? Realistic candidate or not?

Hmmmm? A personality with no political experience in the White House...what the hay, LET'S TRY IT.

None of that. But you want somebody with a bigger, huger than huge, more boisterous, and more bloated, self-aggrandizing ego than Trump ever was, or ever could be, then .....

Vote for the MEGALOMANIA Queen!

I can see now the special minted series of the Oprah Winfrey presidential fine china dinnerware promotion already in queue.

With Oprah Winfrey's specially crafted portrait add signature lovingly embossed on every single plate, glass, and individual pieces of silverware. All with the sign letter of authenticity with Oprah Winfrey's own special signature.

Also a free one-year subscription to Oprah Winfrey magazine.

Air Force One will have a huge picture of her face on the tail wing as she flies over the country looking at all the little people.

The presidential address will now henceforth be called the Oprah Winfrey address, exclusive only on the Oprah Winfrey channel!!!
Martha Stewart could decorate the oval office. Or better yet a whole seasom of that home redo show.

....You have choices in life. External conditions don’t determine your life. You do. It ’s all inside you, in your head, in your wishes and desires. Thoughts are destiny, so thinking positive thoughts will enable positive things to happen.

When bad things happen to us, it’s because we’re drawing them toward us with unhealthy thinking and behaviors. “Don’t complain about what you don’t have. Use what you’ve got. To do less than your best is a sin. Every single one of us has the power for greatness because greatness is determined by service—to yourself and others.”
I read that it reminds me of the "law of attraction" nonsense.

It'd be a stupid move for her IMO. Why would anyone want this. To have every aspect of her life criticized. Maybe she'll be coerced into it by thinking it's her duty or something. However, if she did and wins I suspect she'll regret every minute of it.

Naw. She's rich enough where she can have anybody she wants killed.

If Opera did run and win, it makes me wonder what America's international image would look like, with it seeming the nation has been given over to inexperienced celebrities.

Interesting -- and worrisome -- article in today's Guardian about Oprah's underlying politics:
Oprah Winfrey: one of the world's best neoliberal capitalist thinkers

This strikes me as a reiteration of the Neoliberal doctrine that prosperity is a personal decision; that we're all capable of pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps; that poverty is, thus, a personal failing. Ergo: the poor deserve their poverty and merit no help from the prosperous.
She's sounding better than I imagined.
(But I never watched her show.....just The Color Purple.)

Her first act in office for racial progression ....

Oprah: old racists 'have to die' to achieve racial progress

This is true. What I was taught in the fifties by my parents and grandparents had to die with me; I purposely did not pass on the racial ignorance to my children that was so deeply embedded in the mindset of the generations before me. I have to be constantly on guard not to let the this disdain and stereotypical beliefs against other races and religions come back to the surface of my perceptions. This will never die no matter how strong my will power is; but it will be contained. However, it never was born in the mind of my children, so they are free from this struggle. Racism is not something you can legislate out of the minds of people.

Oprah: old racists 'have to die' to achieve racial progress
^ This, not surprisingly, is a distortion. She did not say that the death of "old racists" was the prerequisite for "racial progress" but, rather, ...

... that the problem would not be solved until older Americans with more racist tendencies die off.

“As long as people can be judged by the color of their skin, the problem is not solved,” she said, adding,“There are still generations of people, older people, who were born and bred and marinated in it – in that prejudice and racism – and they just have to die.” [ibid]

As with the "basket of deplorables," I suspect that what discomforts you about the above is that it shines a light on an inconvenient truth.

Now there is no way I'm going to vote for any Republican.
Exactly, because the issue is not just the Donald but also the fact that, according to the last poll I saw, the party supports Trump by over 70%, thus fulfilling Graham's and Jindal's statement a couple of years ago that it looks like "the Party of Stupid". This is undoubtedly why we are seeing so many Republicans that have already announced that they are not running for reelection this year, mostly those whom we may consider to be "moderates".

I would also add that it has become "the Party of Depravity" as well as basic empathy and morality doesn't seem to be very important to so many of the Groper-In-Chief's supporters. But I betcha they'd change their tune if Trump bragged how he could grope their wives or daughters, but as long as it's someone else's wives or daughters, they don't seem to care one iota.

If you've watched the Secret, her "good thoughts = good things happen/ bad thoughts = bad things happen" would have you really hoping she doesn't run.
Well, I was just having some fun with her praise of individual effort.
I really know nothing about her politics.
And I hope I never need to, for this would portend a future of
entertainment celebrities starting their basic education in
government by winning the presidency. They should start
small....say governor or mayor somewhere.

The concern and consternation about replacing as President one celebrity who had never held a public office before with another celebrity who has never held office before is hard to dismiss. It looks all very strange and suspicious. Nevertheless, at the moment it doesn't seem that the Democrats have any elected official in the wings who is exciting and galvanizing enough to be able to beat any incumbent.

BTW, I saw an interview with Trump from some 20 years ago where he was talking about running for President, and he said Oprah would be his first choice as a running mate.

He probably thought so - for that moment in time. I bet Oprah was mildly flattered - at the time.

For what it's worth, a commentary that her important message is not about running but is directed toward individuals

What I heard in her speech wasn’t a bid to save us all, but rather a powerful charge to the young girls watching at home to tell their own stories, to fight for their own values, and to battle injustices with the certainty that they will be seen and heard.

After last year, who isn't a realistic candidate? Personally I don't think she's a good candidate, but given the incumbent, who could be worse?

I would rather not bother with seeking out and watching The Secret, unless somebody described it as useful in some concrete way.
What is it, and why would I care?

What little I know about Oprah puts her way above her likeliest competition. What would I gain by watching, given my utter lack of interest in celebrity opinions for their own sake?
