Organ donation

How do you all feel about organ donation ?

A few celebreties were being interviewed on Television, and one subject was that of organ donation. The general feeling was that this is something which we should all consider while we are fit; to put off thinking about this leaves emotional doubts with relatives . Some seemed to have very strong views; they wanted their loved ones burried with all their organs, what do you all think? Is it something you have thought about ? talked over with loved ones?:)

I haven't really considered it yet myself, but my 18 year old brother is already signed for everything and anything as spare parts.

I've got it on my license to harvest me if I get killed in an accident :) Hey, I'm gonna be dead, not like I'll need 'em. I think organ donation is something everyone should participate in... I don't really see a valid reason not to.

I'm donating my entire body to science. <3

I find that terribly immature- they're DEAD. They don't need to be buried with their organs- or even at all. There are people who are dying because of these selfish views.

I absoloutely agree with you Jamaesi, but without prior consent from the deceased, what else can be done ?

O.K, so now to the next bit.........

One of the celebs told the story of his brother, who had been declared brain dead. The life support could have been switched off - and the brother have his 'parts' distributed in organ donation. Completely against all expectations, the brother recovered from a very deep coma, and lived for many years after...........:bonk:
Against: "Four hundred people in Britain die every year whilst awaiting an organ transplant.
Many more people who need transplants die before even making it onto the waiting list for organs."

:(

Honestly, I don't know why I didn't sign up to be an organ donor when I got my drivers liscense. I did hear a couple of stories which scared me out of it abit. I heard that alot of hospitals will not make a very good effort to save your life if you are a donor, because of the shortage of organs. Since I have O- blood, I knew if that was true, I would live long if I fell into a comma. I doubt that is true though.
And since I'm going to be cremated, theres not a chance of me comming back to life, so my organs will go to waste. I know my lungs (if asthma does have a part in that) and eyes aren't usable, but I'm pretty sure my kidneys and liver could be used. But my eyes might be usable. If I was blind, I wouldn't mind being severally near sighted. At least I could see.

But without dying, you can donate a kidney, part of your liver - and bone marrow (as well as blood, obviously):)

Organ donation is against my religion, technically, but being Reform I get to pick what I think is appropriate :) Jews believe that a dead body should not be cremated or embalmed or otherwise tampered with. I think sometimes the Orthodox rabbis will approve an autopsy if it means saving the lives of other people with the evidence found. But anyways, I'm definitely an organ donor, even though my parents aren't happy with that. I have no qualms with giving away my organs, and I think that it is definitely in accord with Judaism--save lives when possible.

I believe in organ donation too, but this seems awfully rude and a bit arrogant for you to call people selfish because their beliefs are different from yours.:tsk: Organ donation is a very personal decision for some people.

Here in Georgia, I got a discount on my last driver's license renewal for selecting to be an organ donor, but I think they dropped it in the last year or 2. Our minister has a bumper sticker "Don't Take Your Organs to Heaven. Heaven Knows We Need Them Here.":162:

Maybe I'm wrong, but if you donate a kidney while you live, don't you have to go to a hospital to get your blood run through a machine so it can be cleaned and filtered? I cant think of what the process is called. I do donate blood though. It only takes a few minutes and it doesn't hurt that much. I did donate plasma for awhile, because you get paid for that, but after two blown viens, and a sore arm because the person poking my arm missed about 10 times, I can say I'm done with tha and going back to blood.

As long as you have one kidney you can still function relatively normally... no dialasis (sp?) machine needed.

I don't think it's immature to call them selfish... that's all it is, selfishness. There's no reason to keep organs in a dead person when someone living needs them.

There is if you think that god told you not to part with them. What would you think if I said "that's very selfish of you to have a gay lover. Men need the women more than you do." You would probably find that very rude, because you think it's natural to have that sort of relationship, and that the best road to take is to follow what is natural, instead of twisting things. People who don't want to donate their organs because of religion think that is the best road to take, because they don't want to twist what God wants of them, and what is consequently "natural," in a sense.

I don´t think the dead really care what is done to them seeing as they´re dead and all. XP

The arrogant part I´ll agree with- but I don´t think this is rude nor arrogant. If you want to keep something you don´t need for absolutely no good reason and allow someone to die- you´re very selfish.

Please.

Being gay DOESN´T kill anyone. This isn´t even like comparing apples and oranges, it´s like a banana and a rock.

I also have a problem with a G-d who would let people die when a simple donation of something the previous owner has and no longer needs could save them. I also don´t understand how many religions- a lot of them much older than modern medicine and organ transplants- could have been against something that didn´t even exist when they were formed.

Not the same at all. It is a simple comparison of apples and apples. It is a comparison of beleifs. I'm saying it is rude to call someone selfish for their beleifs. And I definitely agree that a loving God woudn't command us not help someone. That's why that's not my religion. But to call someone selfish because of their beleifs is cold, rude, and completely uncalled for.

Hopefully you'll understand, then, that if it's rude to insult someone because of their beliefs, it is equally rude to insult them because of their sexuality. I will continue to hope no one will do either.
