Pagans and Sexuality

What are some of the differences between the Pagan idea of sex and the Abrahamic idea that we can see, both by examining the ancient world, and modern Pagans? Why do Abrahamics have such a vastly different view of sex?

Care to outline the Christian and pagan views as you see them?

Well sure Stephen. I can only speak for ancient Egypt here. In ancient Egypt sex was seen as a sacred act yes, so much so, that the obelisk was an Egyptian symbol. The Egyptians didn't view adultery very highly, but besides that, any sex was pretty well "permissable", and sex certainly wasn't viewed as sinful if done outside marriage. Where as I've seen many Christians for example, and Muslims as well, say that the only time sex is pure is within marriage, and otherwise is filthy and a sin. There's a huge contrast between that, and most modern Pagans don't even see sex as an issue.

I think that in pre Christian Ireland sex wasn't regarded as sacred, I think it was pretty casual. Many different types of relationship were acknowledged and people were pretty free to follow their desires.
eg Land of women: tales of sex and ... - Google Books

There is certainly a repressed type evident in the literature listing the animals, people etc that Irish Christian monks couldn't have sex with.
But I think the existence of such lists tells it's own story :)

Interestingly (to me) When poking about for a response I came across this about Christian homosexual marriage. It apparently appeared in 'The Irish Times' in '98
When Marriage Between Gays Was a Rite

See that's the point. Is casual sex not sacred? You speak as though there's a difference between sacred sex and casual sex. Pagans believe all sex is sacred.
