WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Gov. Sarah Palin announced Friday that she will step down as Alaska's chief executive by the end of the month. She will not seek election to a second gubernatorial term in 2010.

As the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, Palin had been considered one of the front-runners for the GOP nomination in 2012.
"People who know me know that besides faith and family, nothing's more important to me than our beloved Alaska," Palin said at an announcement from her home in Wasilla. "Serving her people is the greatest honor I could imagine."
Palin was elected governor in 2006. She was tapped as Arizona Sen. John McCain's vice presidential running mate last year.
Palin said she was transferring authority to Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, who will be sworn in at the Governor's Picnic on July 26.

Palin added in a statement that she was "determined to take the right path for Alaska even though it is not the easiest path. ... Once I decided not to run for re-election, I also felt that to embrace the conventional lame duck status in this particular climate would just be another dose of politics as usual, something I campaigned against and will always oppose."
A Republican source close to her political team told CNN's John King that it was a "calculation" she made that "it was time to move on." The governor's "book deal and other issues" were "causing a lot of friction" in her home state, the source said, adding that he believes she is "mapping out a path to 2012."
Another source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said Palin "thinks she has accomplished goals she has set forward. ... She sees what a positive influence she has had on people's lives from traveling the country in the last year."
Don't Miss

Following Palin's announcement, the Democratic National Committee blasted what it called her "bizarre behavior."
"Either Sarah Palin is leaving the people of Alaska high and dry to pursue her long shot national political ambitions or she simply can't handle the job now that her popularity has dimmed and oil revenues are down," DNC spokesman Brad Woodhouse said.
"Either way, her decision to abandon her post and the people of Alaska who elected her continues a pattern of bizarre behavior that more than anything else may explain the decision she made today."
Republican strategist and CNN contributor Ed Rollins said, to a certain extent, Palin's announcement makes her look "terribly inept."
"I think everyone is shocked by this, and I think to a certain extent everyone is going to assume there's another story. You don't just quit with a year and a half to go. You certainly don't do this as a stepping stone to run for president. You finish the job that you're in, and obviously she's not doing that," he said.
"I think people are going to be very suspicious because of the timing. You don't quit on the Friday of a three-day holiday. If you are going to do this, you think it through, you give a good speech," Rollins said.
In an interview last month with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Palin said she was unsure about her re-election bid because she needed to focus on her state and her family.
"So, no decision yet on either 2010 or let alone 2012?" Blitzer asked.

"No decision that I'd want to announce today," Palin responded.

Palin catapulted on the national stage last August when McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, chose her as his running mate.

.....and I can’t help but think it is our fault.

she still wants to be president i suspect. this is the only way to ensure that her list of "screw ups" dosent grow longer, as governor atleast.

As RF members some of us could have been a lot nicer to her. Even I am partially guilty. I didn't have to follow her around like a puppy with my tongue hanging out that far.

I didn't know that Palin was a regular poster on RF.

I'll bet she thinks this will further her national political ambitions. I think she's wrong, though. She can dedicate the next three years cultivating her base, but I don't think her base will be enough to help her.

Maybe she's realized the error of her ways, and that it's time to step back and take a long look at her life, and decide to become a good person. A person of character. A person who stands for something.

Or maybe this is just a symbol of how completely inept she is.

Maybe it's just me, but I tried to understand the meaning of what she said, and to come up with some coherent reasoning behind it (or even have it hang together in a coherent whole) and I am completely lost. Does anyone else understand what she said?

P.S. If I take it one sentence at a time, I can generally make sense out of a given sentence (there were exceptions). It was just when I put all those sentences together that meaning seemed to vanish.......

The main thing I came away with was that there don't seem to be any competent speech writers in Alaska. It was awkward and embarrassing, and I found myself wishing Parnell would step up and rescue Palin from her own rambling incoherence. When Parnell did take the microphone, though, he was only marginally more coherent than she was.

I still think Todd is hot, though. ;)

Hmmm..I wonder what this could mean?

"I am now looking ahead and how we can advance this country together with our values of less government intervention, greater energy independence, stronger national security, and much-needed fiscal restraint," the former Republican vice presidential candidate wrote in a posting on her Facebook page. Palin's spokeswoman, Meghan Stapleton, confirmed Palin wrote the entry.

I think she thinks she is going to be the president one day..so she better sart studying the world map.(like a globe). Its kinda hard to do that and be the governor at the same time.

I mean not to go on and on..We had this globe..it was a game ..and it asked you questions..and it gave you multiple choice answers..and you could spin it around to fnd the answer..you only had a limited time though so sometimes you just guessed..

If you got the right answer it made a really happy sound..kind of like a weird flute playing and it would say CONGRATULATIONS YOU ARE CORRECT..if you got the wrong answer(or took too long answering ) it made a bad sound...and it would say SORRY the correct answer is!!(and they gave it to you)

Then it would stop and the flute would play again and gave you a grade. Then you could "start over again" or turn it off..It actually told you goodbye..It was a nice globe.

Sounds like Sarah's intellectual level. Maybe she has one in the Gov's office, right beside the window she can see Russia from.

I hate to amit it..But liked that globe because I'm SMART but I quit learning stuff like that about in 9th grade because I got pregnant.(well because I worked ..and I DID make LOTS of money in the stock market..I wasn't aiming to be a politician)

SOOO. Im not the governor of a state thinking I can be president!..I think she needs a globe like that. That would at least be a start.Thats the problem..she doesnt have a globe and she doent care.Thats not "important".

Some people just arent knowledgable enough particularly to run a country. No matter how charismatic they are ...or smart in other areas..

Perhaps she is working on the "Alaska For Independence" movement.

That would be epic, can you imagine her as the president of the independant state of Alaska, it would be illegal to go out in public without a semi automatic weapon and legal, nay compulsory to shoot someone for impregnating your unmarried daughter. :D

Agreed. I suspect it's an attempt to bail a sinking ship as well as her legal fees problem. I think she's deluded enough to think she should run in a presidential election again. Mind boggling really.

It's called The Palin Effect. Scientists are studying it now.
