Passover in The Qur'an

Did you know that Muslims celebrate the Passover?

When Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, arrived in Madinah on the tenth of the lunar month of Muharram, he found that the Jews there were fasting.

The Prophet asked them why they were fasting on this day, and they explained that it was the day that God saved the Children of Israel from the Pharaoh, and that Moses fasted in thanks on this day.

The Prophet said, "We have more claim to Moses than you." He fasted on that day and commanded Muslims to fast on the day. (Al-Bukhari)

How similar or different is this account of events from the Jewish version?

Even when I followed Islâm that famous line of Muhammad’s struck me as incredibly arrogant — he and the other ‘Arabs have more of a ‘claim’ to Moshe than the Jews? It never sat right with me, and now seems patently absurd and a sign of deep envy by Muhammad.

i never knew this, when is the day for this.
is it part of the sunnah to do this (doesn't matter if you do it or not) or is it mandatory, a must?

It's an optional Sunnah

That day was the 10th. day of the month of Muharram (the first month in the Muslim calendar)

Either 1 or 2 days

The 10th. of Muharram alone, or (the 9th. and the 10th.), or (the 10th. and 11 th. of Muharram)

Other verses mentioned in The Qur'an before the Exodus:

(And We certainly seized the people of Pharaoh with years of famine and a deficiency in fruits that perhaps they would be reminded)

(7:130)

(So We sent upon them the flood and locusts and lice and frogs and blood as distinct signs, but they were arrogant and were a criminal people)

(7:133)

The Qur'an then tells us that the children of Israel were granted an exodus from Egypt:

(And when the punishment descended upon them, they said, "O Moses, invoke for us your Lord by what He has promised you. If you [can] remove the punishment from us, we will surely believe you, and we will send with you the Children of Israel.")

(7:134)

But when the punishment was lifted they broke the promise:

(But when We removed the punishment from them until a term which they were to reach, then at once they broke their word)

(7:135)

(So We took retribution from them, and We drowned them in the sea because they denied Our signs and were heedless of them)

It doens't get much more respectful than that now does it? Is this supposed to be an example of good manners or is it another example of the famous Muslim sense of humor?

Envy? If he (PBUH) was envious of Moses (PBUH) he would've simply ignored the importance of that day. If you are envy of someone you will not assist in highlighting his message. Personally it struck me as incredibly unifying. Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) came as a true successor to the previous prophets, he emphasized the importance of their message as well as their similarities. Islam honored ALL prophets and did not differentiate between any of them in terms of their status or religious significance. We know the message of Moses and Muhammed (PBUT) are the same regardless of how their followers behaved later on. As a Muslim it makes me deeply proud that Islam stays truthful to its claims. How many religions highlight and/or encourage their followers on following the rituals of other religions?
