Pelosi on the Taiwan visit

I support and applaud every word of her statement on Taiwan. China and Russia (and DPRK) are using gaslighting and bullying tactics to get what they want. The answer has to be more than 'no', more than hell no and in deed **** no, no way, never.

The US is far far far from perfect but at the core of the being of the nation is an affirmation of self-evident truths and not-yet-fully-manifested virtues that are the foundation of the future.

Pelosi's statement is a statement of those foundational principles in today's dark world.

The Taiwan Relations Act set out America’s commitment to a democratic Taiwan, providing the framework for an economic and diplomatic relationship that would quickly flourish into a key partnership. It fostered a deep friendship rooted in shared interests and values: self-determination and self-government, democracy and freedom, human dignity and human rights.

And it made a solemn vow by the United States to support the defense of Taiwan: “to consider any effort to determine the future of Taiwan by other than peaceful means … a threat to the peace and security of the Western Pacific area and of grave concern to the United States.”

Today, America must remember that vow...
...
The CCP’s brutal crackdown against Hong Kong’s political freedoms and human rights — even arresting Catholic Cardinal Joseph Zen — cast the promises of “one-country, two-systems” into the dustbin. In Tibet, the CCP has long led a campaign to erase the Tibetan people’s language, culture, religion and identity. In Xinjiang, Beijing is perpetrating genocide against Muslim Uyghurs and other minorities. And throughout the mainland, the CCP continues to target and arrest activists, religious-freedom leaders and others who dare to defy the regime.
...
Indeed, we take this trip at a time when the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy. As Russia wages its premeditated, illegal war against Ukraine, killing thousands of innocents — even children — it is essential that America and our allies make clear that we never give in to autocrats.
...
By traveling to Taiwan, we honor our commitment to democracy: reaffirming that the freedoms of Taiwan — and all democracies — must be respected.

Also, I saw this in a story about the visit. Of course it was pure coincidence that we had a number of ships in the region for "routine" deployments. Yup, pure coincidence. Got it ;)

Four U.S. warships, including the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, were positioned in waters east of Taiwan on what the U.S. Navy called routine deployments. The carrier had transited the South China Sea and was now in the Philippines Sea, east of Taiwan and the Philippines and south of Japan, a U.S. Navy official told Reuters.

It was operating with the guided missile cruiser USS Antietam and destroyer USS Higgins, with the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli also in the area.

House republicans oppose her trip. Senate Republicans support her trip. Someone didn't get the memo.

[Fine to.

I'm right with ya on this.

I'm rooting for Pelosi and anyone taking the trip with her.

America isn't subservient to Communist China.

Ms. Pelosi has been Speaker for years without going to Taiwan. So what could be one reason she chose to go right now. America is facing many problems such as rampant inflation, putative recession, unbridled illegal immigration, disastrous pull out from Afghanistan, supply chain issues, monkey pox, baby food shortages, and so much more. Polls show most Americans think the country is on the wrong track. Can’t have the voters in the upcoming elections thinking about those things. What could the Democrats in power do since they can’t run in their record. Send Nancy with the laughing eyes to Taiwan as a distraction. Expect more news cycle distraction stories between now and November.

What an expected post. Even Republicans in the Senate applauded her for going as part of her Asia trip. And, of course, Republicans never never ever do things for political purposes.

Ha! I never said her going was a bad thing. I just pointed out the timing was politically convenient. Too bad if pointing that out offends you.

[...] it is essential that America and our allies make clear that we never give in to autocrats.

... right after visiting Saudi Arabia and continuing the United States' record of mollycoddling Gulf dictatorships.

The U.S. has made it clear throughout decades that it supports democracy when politically convenient and installs, aids, and props up dictatorships when politically convenient. This visit is no more than geopolitical pragmatism and showmanship.

Glad to see the liberal Democrats do you have some balls!

Liberal Democrats led the U.S. through two World Wars.

Although I'm not sure why the Chinese are making such a big stink about this. It's just a visit from a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Might as well have the mayor of Podunk visit Taiwan, for as much geopolitical significance this actually has. It's not as if Biden is visiting Taiwan, nor has anyone proposed reversing U.S. policy regarding Taiwan.

Well the words in the OP rang pretty ballsy.
