Six online petitions calling for congress to deliver monthly stimulus checks of $2,000 until the end of the pandemic have now collectively surpassed 2.3 million signatures.

The largest Change.org petition for recurring stimulus checks—created by Stephanie Bonin, a Denver restaurant owner—asks the U.S. House of Representatives and senate to pass legislation that will provide monthly "$2,000 payments for adults and $1,000 payments for kids" until the pandemic ends.

I voted no for several reasons.
  • "until the pandemic ends" - according to what I've read it will never "end" but rather peter out to a low level.
  • I'm in favor helping the poor and homeless but this is not the way to do it.
  • I'd rather spend money as President Biden has indicated - on infrastructure broadly considered. People who are out of work will find jobs through that program.
  • I was in favor of such programs in the past but now it's time to start considering the deficit and why I'm in favor of paying for new programs with taxes. I very much prefer the left's tax and spend to the right's borrow and spend.

As a foreigner, I got a limited perspective, but I find it interesting that a considerable group of Americans possibly want the state to tax them as little as possible but at the same time call for the state to help them out.

Skip and go directly to UBI, decreasing military spending to offset, and address wage stagnation (the real reason people don't want to return to work).

What about people who lack the necessary skills, experience or physical ability to work in infrastructure projects?

I read the thought bubble over his head.
"The economic boost would trickle down to lesser workers
by providing more employment as house cleaners, grounds
workers, cooks, waiters, dishwashers, & marketing executives."

That's just not realistic nor feasible. It will destroy the economy.

One of the big reasons I mentioned Biden's expanded definition of infrastructure is that many of the jobs created would be physical in nature not ones requiring advanced skills. Training should of course be part of the plan for those without experience.

A friend of mine is basically confined to a wheel chair because his legs are useless and he has only partial control over his arms. He works in an IT job with great success. He also has volunteered for some events that I'm part of where he does a necessary job that does not require physical ability.

Outside of the idle rich and some Hollywood stars, most people want to work and feel that they're doing something worthwhile. It's time to solve problems that get in their way.

I see rather than engaging in serious discussion you've chosen a snarky incorrect reply.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate your sentiment, but I think your expectations are overly optimistic. I've met plenty of unemployed people who were stuck in unemployment because they had a lifetime of physically demanding jobs behind them that they physically couldn't do any more, and no experience in other fields to fall back on.

It would be better to use incentives to get people back into industry like offering a four day work week and or shorter hours like many European countries do.

Could you just imagine say..... A married couple with 5 kids ($4,000 for the adults and $5,000 for the kids)= $9,000 per month = $108,000 per year.
Imagine where everyone would be rich.
No one would need to work for a living.
All government need do is print money.
