Physical Abuse | Where is the line drawn?

Startling data about sexual, physical violence

We all agree that physical abuse is bad, but in some other threads it has come up that some folks have different views on what physical abuse is, namely, the difference in abuse and discipline. So here are some questions to consider.

In Children
  • When does discipline become abuse?
  • Is spanking abuse?
  • Are alternative forms of discipline abuse, such as using hot sauce on the tongue?
  • What is the difference in a slap on the but and a slap on the cheek?
In Adults
  • Should an adult be disciplined?
  • If not, what is the difference in disciplining a child and an adult?
  • What age is the cut off between the two in terms of discipline?
  • Is a woman allowed to slap a man if he is being to forward? Does this count as discipline? Why?

  • Is a woman allowed to slap a man if he is being to forward? Does this count as discipline? Why?

In Children
  • When does discipline become abuse? When it hurts the child, either emotionally or physically, or both, for a substantial time following its administration. So, what's a "substantial time?" Off hand I would say for more than five minutes.
  • Is spanking abuse? It could be.
  • Are alternative forms of discipline abuse, such as using hot sauce on the tongue? Abusive? They could be
  • What is the difference in a slap on the but and a slap on the cheek? I'd say a slap on the cheek, besides leaving visible evidence, is more of an attack on the psyche of the child.
In Adults
  • Should an adult be disciplined? Depends on the situation. In the armed services it happens quite often, and is regularly used by our justice system.
  • If not, what is the difference in disciplining a child and an adult?
  • What age is the cut off between the two in terms of discipline? Depends on the form of discipline and the context.
  • Is a woman allowed to slap a man if he is being to forward? Should a woman? No. Does this count as discipline? It would. Why? because it's an attempt to change behavior by inflicting suffering.

If you can't tell whether something is abuse or not, you'll probably want to err on the side of milder punishment and discipline.

In Adults
  • Should an adult be disciplined?without discipline the world will stop
  • If not, what is the difference in disciplining a child and an adult?
  • What age is the cut off between the two in terms of discipline? 25 for male , 45 for female .
  • Is a woman allowed to slap a man if he is being to forward? Does this count as discipline? Why? the man is stronger than woman in general case , it's looks like when a child slap an adult .

From what I understand to be common disciplinary actions---I'm not aware of them all---I don't think they should be.

But we know that there are occasionally instances of abuse by both the military and correctional facilities. Where would you draw the line on what would be considered abuse and what would be considered discipline?

These two will probably get the most comments. Why did you select the ages that you did? Do you think a man matures faster than a woman? Studies show this not to be the case. After the age of 45 does a woman no longer need discipline?

As for the second one, are you suggesting that the man is the adult and the woman is a child in a relationship or just that it looks that way?

Unable to say. I'd have to know what the various forms of discipline are.

Here is an interesting website on Corporal Punishment.

World Corporal Punishment Research

From the About page

This is an independent, non-profit, factual website devoted to the study of corporal punishment (e.g. caning, paddling, birching, strapping, slippering, spanking, flogging) throughout the world, in history and in the present day.

Its main purpose is to provide objective information and background about this social and cultural phenomenon which has been a significant part of life for thousands of years.

it's my opinion , nothing relation about Islam
the woman is belong to her family from 1 to 20 , then she married , the authority changed to her husband for the rest of her age .

no it's not the matter of adult or not , or age , it's who strong and who is weak in matter of physical case

I'd say anything done physically to punish or coerce is abuse. I have a small exception for occasional spanking of young children, though. Back when I knew everything about parenting, researched and read a bunch of parenting books, and had more energy, I was firmly against spanking. But I've since changed my mind based on a few studies and experience. I'm not opposed to a rarely used, one not hard spank for kids between 2-6, in situations where something needs immediate attention and where the child has little reasoning ability. When I say rare, I mean my kids have been swatted maybe every few months.

What about physical exercise used as a punishment as done by the military? Is this acceptable discipline? How about hard labor used to punish criminals?

I mean corporal punishment inflicted by actual touch. I don't know the extent of punitive physical exercise the military employs, and I'm not familiar with the military in general, so I can't speak to it.

I don't think hard labor is appropriate criminal punishment, but like the military, I'm not familiar with it.

So far as I know, there is no scientific evidence that corporeal punishment of children, such as spanking, improves the child over the long haul, and there is some scientific evidence that it leads to problems later on -- such as reduced performance in school. But corporeal punishment is one of our sacred cultural institutions, so we must preserve it at all costs to the child, no?
