Mine is just a tree done in the Coastal Salish art style. All the detail is lost as a tiny icon, but it suits me and I like to think of it as a little tree of life

Mine is Crypty the Cryptosporidium, mascot of Blakely, Georgia's "Cryptosporidium Daze" festival, as reported on in an old article from the Onion:

I used to be into homebrewing. On another forum, my avatar was an electron microscope image of a yeast cell. One year, we did a thing where everyone's avatars dressed up for Halloween, so my yeastie dressed up as a cryptosporidium.

Shortly after that, I joined RF and figured I should add an avatar. I had Crypty handy, so I uploaded that and figured I would pick something more penguiny when I had the chance. That was 17 years ago.

My avatar represents the fact that I think close-ups of birds' faces make dramatic avatars. I used a variety of other pictures, all critters I've taken, such as a squirrel, a bumblebee...and I've forgotten what other ones I've used...one of the benefits of age-related dementia...
Can't get much closer-up than my banner photo. ;)

I change mine every once and again to reflect my interests, beliefs or aspects of myself. Currently, I have a picture of a Harley Davidson Heritage Classic 114 that I took for a test ride. It's mostly blacked out with some nice red highlights. I love classic style motorcycles. This one reminded me of myself....and rock and roll.

I had to change the one I'd had for years because of the forum update. The old one was better.

New one got chosen to accommodate the circular format of the forum update and the "religion" field no longer being obvious. It's a blatantly Druidic symbol that anyone who knows anything about Druidry knows. With oak leaves for the three rays, because of course.

I see I have a lot to learn about my ancient ancestral religion of Europe. I've only touched on a little so far -- the bits and pieces of tradition that have survived the generations.

According to one of the AI image generators I use, mine is what a 'frubal' looks like.

A 'frubal' is what we used to call ratings here in RF. Frubals were somewhat different in that each rating came with a personalized message that only the receiver could see.

What would a typical message say? Would it come in a PM or by some other means?

The frubal messages had their own widget in profiles.

A typical message might say something like, "You took the words out of my mouth!" or, "You may be a smart-***, but you're my favorite smart*** :D" or basically anything that someone might send as a profile post now. The difference from the profile posts is that only the receiving member could see it.

Mine represents the non-dual awareness that is expressed as the classic "positionless position" of zen and the "not one, not two" of the two truths doctrine. Just kidding, it's easy to spot when I'm scrolling around.

I occasionally see yours and think you're me.

Mine was done on a bit of a whim, but was supposed to suggest I'm more interested in having my positions challenged than attack others. And I'm well-rounded (J/K)...

I vaguely remember trying to find a Celtic design, since my user name is based off a Celtics basketballer, and I thought it might be cool to tie those worlds together a little.

Used to be a nice little personal touch.

A few here have mentioned the reason behind their avatar of choice, but I'm curious about many others. Please explain why you have chosen your particular avatar and how it represents you.

Mine, a cosmic spiral, represents my belief in life, death, and rebirth as our spiritual journey circles around and around, yet still progesses forward.
Angry tactless groundskeeper.
What else for me, eh.
