A tragic character is a character in a piece of fiction who suffers from a character flaw. This flaw works itself out in the story and eventually proves to be the character's undoing. It may be noble or foolish, good or evil, but it always gets him in the end.

Some examples:

Braveheart -- Wallace is stubborn, passionate, unyielding, and trusting. He trusts his ally without question, and then, his trust of him even after betrayel causes him to die.

Gladiator: Maximus is loyal to the empire and truth, which sets him at odds with Commidus. That, in its turn, leads him to seek revenge on Commidus, which leads to his death.

Antigone: Antigone stubbornly chooses to do the just thing and bury her brother, and the same justice causes her to stand defiantly before her king, and she dies. The king's arrogance causes him to focus on an affront to him and the polis, which leads to the death of his family.

What he said ^^^.

I'm going to say that the mentally deficient horse was a tragic character, but it's been a long time since I read that book, though it was very good! :D

It could also be the pigs, who, in the end, become pretty synchronous to humans, due to arrogance, greed, and egocentrism.

Welcome Jimbob :). I hope it helps a bunch.

Druidus, yes, I have read both. I thoroughly enjoyed them both. My vote on who it would have been would be the same as you, but there is also the one other pig (can't remember his name), who was run off because of his devotion to the older pig and reviled from that point on.

I can't remember the names, because it's been a while since I read it .

Great job NO* I ran out of frubal power. Boxer is your boy jimbob. He works really hard to establish the new communist govement working (like a horse) all day long and in the end he is taken off to a meat market. I heard an english teacher in high school say he was sybolic of the loyalty of the people of russia who after all their hard work were overlooked when their usefulness was outlived.

I would've chosen the Donkey (I forget his name). He's the one that can actually read the rules as the pigs are crossing them out, and can remember that the rules weren't always the way that they wind up at the end of the book. (I think the only rule left at the end is something like "All animals are equal. But some are more equal than others.") For the sake of his own safety, he doesn't speak out about it. I see that more as a survival skill than a character flaw, though.

Another good choice might be Molly, the horse/ pony with the obsession with ribbons.

A truly tragic character from Animal farm was the horse.

he was the strength of the farm, did anything for the cause, worked himself to death, accepted any explanation for any injustice due to his ignorance.

When he finally worked himself to death for the pigs they sold him to a glue factory.

His character was ignorant but heroic and his reward was to be discarded as so much trash.

He is the most tragic character of that book.

The other would be the pig that tried to do things right but was chased off by the bad pigs dogs and then he was turned from a war hero to an enemy by the pigs lies and the farm animals ignorance.
