But she is treating all as potential abusers, so she is in effect.

She has no way of vetting them, so it seems to me that there's no other option in a potentially unsafe situation.

Whether occupying an empty seat with a bag is the best way to deal with potential unsafety is a different question.

Perhaps in the future, and where the same situation occurs, she could move to sit with a female.

Although many, especially females, will sympathise with her plight, I think it basically boils down to not creating another problem when trying to solve one particular problem - and which would apply in so many other situations.

Well, the poor moderation also effects the quality of the community itself, along with the downvoting system makes it toxic (although subreddits with smaller communities tend to be less so.)

You might find this one interesting: r/steamengines
I don't doubt that Reddit has problems stemming
from lack of moderation. But the criticism in the
OP went far beyond that, into areas that afflict
RF as well.

It seems obvious to me - as to either sex being involved, but what do you think?
If it becomes a regular problem the transit authority will make a rule. She is cowardly, possibly a rape victim, shut in or someone who has never been anywhere or done anything. A simple rule will make the situation more clear to her, and she'll either allow someone to sit or get up herself. Its only once in a while that there is overflow, so no rule is necessary.

And no. I would not move the bag.

Let me explain. When I was in 9th grade I sat down next to a young girl on the public school bus. Some idiot 3 years older than us wanted to sit next to her, and I refused though he threatened me with a razor blade. I wouldn't let him near her, even though I didn't know her. My protective instincts I guess and perhaps a bit of youthful hubris. He withdrew the razor blade and gave up. Now then, why shouldn't a woman protect herself? Its just a seat on a bus, and its hardly an insult.

She might have wanted him to sit next to her, given that girls are usually more mature around that age and often have older boyfriends.

I've put this in this forum, given it seems the most appropriate.

I think seats are there for people to seat. Not allowing someone else to have that seat is just rude. I take public transportation regularly and most people are just normal passengers. I've had a few annoy me, but it's rare. Most people are fine.
