I can't come up with a scenario where I could trust that they would actually follow through with the money, or wouldn't use the opportunity to make things worse for me in some way that wasn't part of the original deal.

I'm going to assume there is no unanticipated catch such as unwittingly having sold my soul to the devil.

I'm also not concerned about not explaining myself as those close to me will notice an unaccountable increase in my liquidity and will most likely put it together, then do my explaining for me.

I was thinking more of possibilities like "turns out there is no money, and while you were in your leather suit, they went through your clothes, found your wallet, grabbed your ID and stole your identity."

I guess its a risk/reward problem. Is the risk of having your wallet stolen worth the certain discomfort and uncertain reward? You have clearly landed on it not being worth the risk.
