NPC is short for "non-player character"

It is a term from computer games

It means a character in a game who is not controlled by any human player, but is instead controlled directly by the game/program

Some say that some people in this reality are NPCs

Basically, an NPC would blindly follow someone else’s programs, not think, never question, not be curious, produce no original thought, have no authentic agency - etc.

Not a real person then...

Not a participant in reality, but a part of the game

They are supposedly sham people who fill in the gaps between the real people, who are either not at all conscious or only conscious in a very limited way - see this link

But... do you believe there is such things??? - and why do you think what you think?

Personally, I'm not sure

But whenever I've been on psychiatric wards I'm pretty certain that some of the other patients were NPCs

And sometimes when I'm on the bus I see people who I'm pretty sure are NPCs

What you are describing is lack of sentience.

I have not experienced any people in pragmatic reality who are not inherently sentient.

I hardly know how to answer this :D

Instead I think I will just once again as in the last reply to you, highly encourage you to really invest some time learning critical thinking and skepticism, spend the time to get to know what it is and to become as good at it as you can.

I suppose anything is possible. I remember the movie line "A machine becomes human when you can't tell the difference anymore."

In computer games, one can still tell the difference. Based on my experience with automated phone systems, they may not ever be able to get computer AI to be able to interact and converse properly.

NPCs in contrast to PCs? When you have players, you must first assume to be in a game. In the "Matrix" films (which are about a game not a simulation) the agents, the oracle and the architect were NPCs (called "programs" in the Matrix).
Do you think we are in a game? Do you think we are in such a ****ty game that you could detect a program just by looking at them?

No, I don't think we are in a game, not at all

But I do think it's a simulation

But if you're on a psychiatric ward (where I saw the NCPs) then you are in an enclosed space and people who you wouldn't ordinarily notice or pay any attention to just seem to be limited and repetitive - for instance, always wearing the same clothes

Psychiatric wards are for people who are on the frontiers of reality, they are enchanted places where you can feel the presence of The Simulation

All the non-NPCs on the last psychiatric ward I was on were very intelligent and lively, in comparison to the NPCs, who were dull and just kind of came across as stupid and limited

But I don't think the non-NCPs had any concept of "NPCs" - and I never used the term when I was on that psychiatric ward, but I effectively believed some other people were

Maybe, the people in the ward who do not seem lively are the ones who are actually swallowing the prescribed medicines.

I too was on prescribed medicines, everyone was, but there was something genuinely artificial about the possible NPC people, something weird and uncanny

When we are in a simulation, we are all NPCs. Maybe some just run with different parameters?

Yes, I think everyone is AI

But that some AI is controlled by The Simulation (the NPCs) and that other AIs control themselves so are not NPCs

Since I personally do not believe in simulation theory existence i voted No in you poll :)

In my understanding everyone has a purpose in life and take part in daily life, even if we try pull aay from being a part of society, we still are a part of it.

Worldly-wise there are no 'sham people'. All people are respectfully 'people'. Now, you may say that since I am an atheist and do not accept God and the related superstitions, I am a Philosophical Zombie. That will be your view and will not affect me in any way.
The real zombies for me are those who believe without evidence. They are not sentient of the short-comings of their belief.

The subconscious mind generates "NPC" in your dreams so they do exist.
Sometimes these NPCs crossover into our experience of conscious reality for some i.e. schizophrenia.

Not saying you nor anyone else is schizophrenic, just pointing out this is something the subconscious mind is capable of.
How can you tell? You can't really. What we experience as reality is a combination of actual reality and a reality that is created for us by the subconscious mind. Often people have trouble telling the difference.

We all play the role of NPC at some point during the day.

All that means is you are a non essential part of someone else's story. That's exactly what you are to everyone you pass but only limitedly interact with.

None of us can tell whether you're sentient, can we?

That's exactly what an AI would say!

You may think you're the protagonist, but that's only true of the story in your own head, and nobody else's.
