I'm sure the authorities have rather better reasons for doing this than oppression - like security being the obvious one and relevant.

You mean because some so called "authorities" oppress some women that you also are passionate about oppressing, you assume they have great reason by default. ;)

I am with you. That's the way to go. One must oppress a part of womenkind who want to be a little different to others under your thumb. I agree.

Well, if you think religious beliefs trump virtually every other consideration then go with it - but don't expect others without such beliefs to follow on behind meekly accepting of such.

Don't you think nudity is different than not wearing Hijab? So, in civilized countries women do not wear Hijab, so you think they are nude?
Of course it's different.
..but the underlying principle is the same.
It is immodest to go around showing your "private parts".
"private parts" meaning things like breasts etc.

It used to be illegal to feed a baby in a public place, but probably not now .. I can't keep up .. everything goes too fast for me, including the traffic .. BANG!!

Well here are 2 versions of oppression I would accept. Totally covered people should not be allowed to work with other humans in social sense. Then there are banks and public protest or required photo IDs. And naked people are not allowed in or around automobile traffic.

Of course, relating to females, and with regards to Iran and Afghanistan, apart from many other countries too. And seemingly, mostly about Muslims and where there might be rules/laws enforcing any particular dress code.

* Poll option: In general, that is, if it doesn't apparently cause offence to others - like how it is legal to be nude in the UK as long as such doesn't cause offence, or sufficient people don't complain over this. But they often do. And is this sufficient reason for religious dress to be enforced - that some are offended?

So, the last option might take into account the feelings of others, but it is basically we who decide as to what we wear as long as such conforms to whatever laws that obtain in our country.

What are your views on this?

We live in a society and so it is important to be respectful of others and the local culture. I would love to spend my days in leggings and t-shirts but if I show up to work like that I'll be getting a call from HR very quickly. There are rules we have to obey, but there are also limits. People should always have the right to dress according to their taste. Using clothes as a weapon to control some people - men aren't that concerned - is a proof of how backwards some societies are.

On the basis of what research?

I shake my head at people who are offended by nudity but especially people who are offended at seeing a mother nursing her baby.

Traditionalism, what a drug.

No it's not illegal anymore. Society in some parts of the world is getting enlightened fortunately.
Modesty is just a social construct. One can easily imagine societies where it's immodest to wear too much clothes and nudity is the sign of wisdom and enlightenment.

Yeah, you do you as you and I do me as me and for the social we let each be, but that is as far as I can tell not your style.
If I was in a position of responsibility, I would not allow nudity in public places.
It's an exceedingly bad idea.
It is the devil's whisper, so as to destroy us.

We are better than that. We are not just animals .. we have been given a "higher" intelligence.
As I've already said, I am aware of violence every saturday night, that comes from men fighting over girls not properly dressed. It just isn't civilised behaviour.

And if I were in charge you would be allowed to do as you like with the general law and so would other people different than you.
