It is said comparisons are odious, maybe particularly to compare the 10 Sikh Gurus one with the others. They all contributed as the need arose to build up what is one of the most dynamic religions. Why compare them? Let us celebrate each one of them.

You know what, you are right :) They all are truly great. It is a shame that there doesn't seem to be a lot of information on some of them :(

I know im not Sikh, but I chose Guru Nanak. I read something about him once, and all I could think was, "what a kind, forgiving, god centered man". I truly do like Nanak and his ways.

While all have my respect I am more moved by some of their lives than others. As Guru Nanak Ji was the first (biography) I read in order to understand the Gurus better, his life may have had more impact on me overall. There are several whose lives (life stories) touched me but since the poll is to pick one I picked Guru Nanak Ji.

I wish I could vote a couple more times. There are some truly great people there without a vote.

Hi my Sikh friends!

This is an interesting poll, and hope you give reasons why to choose x or y, so we as non Sikhs learn more about these Gurus...

I'm not going to vote, since i'm not Sikh, but want to say my opinion if you don't mind :)
IMO I'll vote for GGS, and the reason is:
because i think that He is like a promulgation of all,
and whenever i read it, i have the feeling that all are talking together.

few weeks ago, i visited one of the temples (Gurdwara) here and when i looked to GGS,
i had this feeling, as i'm at present of all Gurus

Thank You!

;) as my frnd Marco pointed that majority of ppl are not aware of Sikhi and Sikh Guru

the extent can be judged from a article

By David Waters

My editor asked me what I was writing about for today.

"Guru Nanak," I said.

"Who?" she replied.

Exactly.

My editor is one of the most intelligent, educated, and informed people I know. And I'm not just saying that because she can delete my column with the click of a mouse.

My point is that even the most intelligent, educated and informed people in this country have never heard of Guru Nanak.

If that's not a shame, it's at least a pity.

Nanak was the founder of one of the world's great religions and was one of history's spiritual giants.

The more we know about people like Guru Nanak, the more we know about God - and each other.

Most of us know plenty about Jesus, Moses, Buddha and, lately, Muhammad.

Many of us have heard of Confucius, Zarathustra (thanks to Nietzsche and Kubrick), and maybe Lao-tze (the man behind the Tao).

Who knows Nanak?

I doubt even Regis Philbin could answer this question: Guru Nanak was the founder of which world religion?

A. Sikhism
B. Jainism.
C. Zoroastrianism.
D. Consumerism.

Don't phone a friend. I'll give you some hints.

Nanak was born in 1469 in northwest India, now Pakistan, a few hundred miles from the Afghanistan border. Like his contemporaries, Luther and Calvin, Nanak was a religious reformer. The most famous and controversial thing he ever said was this: "God is neither Hindu nor Muslim, and the path I follow is God's."

Nanak lived 500 years ago on the border between the Muslim and Hindu worlds. Such a public statement was beyond courageous.

Nanak also was a heroic social and political reformer. He declared that all men are created equal, centuries before Thomas Jefferson did. "Religion lies not in empty words. He who regards all men as equal are religious," said Nanak, who departed from tradition by eating together with people of different castes.

Nanak also declared the equality of women and men, centuries before Elizabeth Cady Stanton did.

The religion he founded stopped women from wearing veils, allowed widows to remarry, and appointed women preachers, centuries before other religions did.

In addition to human equality, he taught dignity of work, charity for the poor and service to others. He preached against idolatry, fanaticism, hate and violence.

"Whom shall I despise since the one Lord made us all?" Nanak said.

Nanak died in peace at age 70, having founded one of the world's great religions.

If you haven't guessed by now, the final answer is:

A. Sikhism.

so lets start with GURU NANAK s Bani ;)

Guru Nanak writes about Himself

Pauree:

I was a minstrel, out of work, when the Lord took me into His service.

To sing His Praises day and night, He gave me His Order, right from the start.

My Lord and Master has summoned me, His minstrel, to the True Mansion of His Presence.

He has dressed me in the robes of His True Praise and Glory.

The Ambrosial Nectar of the True Name has become my food.

Those who follow the Guru's Teachings, who eat this food and are satisfied, find peace.

His minstrel spreads His Glory, singing and vibrating the Word of His Shabad.

O Nanak, praising the True Lord, I have obtained His Perfection. ||27||Sudh||

and with this message Guru Nanak traveled in four directions Himalayas where he met yogis , Hindu rivers , Muslims deserts .

At Himalayas Guru Nanak met Nath yogis who had left their homes , responsibilities , applied ashes to body ......
SiddhGosht-a.jpg
SiddhGosht-c.jpg

Guru Nanak told them , householders way is better ,

Soohee, First Mehl, Seventh House:

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

Yoga is not the patched coat, Yoga is not the walking stick. Yoga is not smearing the body with ashes.

Yoga is not the ear-rings, and not the shaven head. Yoga is not the blowing of the horn.

Remaining unblemished in the midst of the filth of the world - this is the way to attain Yoga. ||1||

By mere words, Yoga is not attained.

One who looks upon all with a single eye, and knows them to be one and the same - he alone is known as a Yogi. ||1||Pause||

Yoga is not wandering to the tombs of the dead; Yoga is not sitting in trances.

Yoga is not wandering through foreign lands; Yoga is not bathing at sacred shrines of pilgrimage.

Remaining unblemished in the midst of the filth of the world - this is the way to attain Yoga. ||2||

Meeting with the True Guru, doubt is dispelled, and the wandering mind is restrained.

Nectar rains down, celestial music resounds, and deep within, wisdom is obtained.

Remaining unblemished in the midst of the filth of the world - this is the way to attain Yoga. ||3||

O Nanak, remain dead while yet alive - practice such a Yoga.

When the horn is blown without being blown, then you shall attain the state of fearless dignity.

Remaining unblemished in the midst of the filth of the world - this is the way to attain Yoga. ||4||1||8|

Continuing On Guru Nanak .

Guru Nanak Sahib was against the division of society on basis of Caste and its was very daring to challenge the System ,low caste were not allowed to touch or read the Scripture but Guru Says ..

The four castes - the Kshatriyas, Brahmins, Soodras and Vaisyas - are equal in respect to the teachings.

One who, as Gurmukh, chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is saved. In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, O Nanak, God is permeating the hearts of each and every being. ||4||3||50||

In each and every heart the Music of the Lord's Flute vibrates, night and day, with sublime love for the Shabad.

Only those few who become Gurmukh understand this by instructing their minds.

O Nanak, do not forget the Naam. Practicing the Shabad you shall be saved. ||8||14||
