Pornography and the internet

Technological advances in our modern times has allowed us to reach great feats. This 'computer age' as some have called it, has given us an unprecedented amount of convenience: computer and mechanical systems are able to do things for us in the fraction of the time it would otherwise take us to do. However, one of the main disadvantages of technology, specifically the internet, is the prevalence of pornography. All of us have been exposed to various elements of 'pornea'. Whether that's in advertisements such as what I can see on the religiousforums adverts, advertising dating sites with scantily clad women, at least when I'm using a shared computer. In Google Chrome I got messages saying things like 'Russian girls want to date in your area' with depictions of again, very immodestly 'dressed' women. Even on Youtube - a supposedly family friendly video upload site - contains gravure and sometimes pornography appears on that site. Youtube, as do many other sites like Tumblr, Twitter and Instagram have dark sides to them.

Thankfully, as a religious person I've been able to excise myself from the internet and television with Yahshua's help. I no longer have a tv or a broadband connection and this, though quite extreme, has helped me to focus on spirituality and observe what Yahshua said in the Beatitudes, to cut off whatever is a source of stumbling (Matthew 5:29-30). I still download Netflix shows at the library and then watch them when I get home so I do have some form of entertainment.

I'm writing this thread because I don't know what's going on in your private homes, but Yahweh is an El who sees in secret (Matthew 6:4, 2 Kings 17:9), therefore it's the secret sins that are often the worst rightly so because part of the conscience is telling the perpetrator that they are indeed shameful hence 'secret'. I'm curious to know how other people avoid the constant bombardment of sex and sexualised footage and images on the internet. I feel for those who are spiritually weak and don't have Yahshua to call upon. Acts 4:12 tells us that this name is the only name in which there is salvation because Yahshua means Yahweh is salvation. That was the Messiah's hebrew name. I suspect that those who are spiritually weak are going to have a big problem using the internet as they are opportunities to sin in so many avenues and with the simple click of a button.

Pornography is sexual immorality which is spoken against in many passages of scriptures such as 1 Thessalonians 4:3 and Matthew 5:28. What are your thoughts on pornography? Do you think the government should ban it, help people to overcome it or just leave things how they are?

Hi soda.
No one said about using porn. Sexualised images and videos are prevalent on the internet. You don’t have to go to a porn site to be exposed to evil. For example, I only watch 2-3 Netflix shows now because of the amount of sex these programmes and films have in them.

Google sends you ads based upon your search patterns.

Just sayin.

If you were getting adverts for Russian Girls from Google, then it was something that you did that caused those ads to show up. Google looks at what you do and then tries to give you more of the same.

Even on Youtube - a supposedly family friendly video upload site - contains gravure and sometimes pornography appears on that site. Youtube, as do many other sites like Tumblr, Twitter and Instagram have dark sides to them.

If you found porn on youtube, you really had to have been looking very hard for it. I use youtube a lot and have yet to see a nipple.

Free speech is essential, so no, I don't think we should attempt to ban it. Further, it's hard to know what "it" is. The definition of "sexualized" varies widely from person to person and culture to culture.

Next, humans ARE sexual beings. If you look at the various draconian ways people have tried to deny that fact down through the ages, the picture isn't pretty. For example, wouldn't you agree that porn is less egregious than prostitution or rape, or restricting women's freedoms by cloistering them?

Heck, it is not that hard. One only needs to put in the right search terms. At least if you want to see a nipple. One can see nudity, even Playboy video centerfolds. But actual porn? No. That is what various adult websites are for.

Instead of setting the Government against something you don't like, how about you just don't use computers and TVs and go to movies that are rated other than G.

What if some people believed religious zealots should be banned by the Government?

First, being 'scantily clad' is not the same as pornography.

Second, I see this as a *benefit* of modern technology. I can view pornographic images without having to go buy a magazine, which is what I did before the internet.

Third, not everyone sees nudity as a bad thing. Even depictions of sexuality are not inherently bad, in my mind. In particular, you come from *one* particular religious background. Others do not share that background and many do not share your views of sexuality.

So, while you can seek to avoid things that you disagree with, that places no requirement on others to do the same.

No, I don't think the government should ban this. In fact, I think it has no business here at all (unless people are being abused or forced to do things without consent).

What a sensible idea; remember when the religious zealots were calling for an alcohol ban that led to prohibition - that worked well, it went underground and led to the increase in gang warfare and helped the rise of the Mafia.
Banning pornography will have a similar effect - it will take over the dark web

I used to get adverts for Bible study groups on facebook.

Perhaps google misunderstood what my searches for "Nuns" were really about.

As you said, you have to ask for nipples to see nipples.

Hi David. Yes I do go to the library to use the internet on a shared computer. Ideally I would give up the internet completely but I’m not at that point yet

It has become such a large part of life, that would be difficult. In the first couple of years after I went into business, there was no internet. Now, I would have a hard time doing business without it. The pros? It's very fast. The cons? It's very impersonal.

Yep, my only objection was to your use of the term "very hard". It is rather easy, but one has to at least try to see it.

And when I use to debate more heavily on a christian forum that was a bit to uptight I used the fact that ads are aimed at you based upon your search patterns by Google searching the trashiest (or hottest, it all depends upon your point of view) lingerie that I could. Then when ads popped up on that site it would have looked to a casual observer as if lingerie companies were targeting that Christian site.

EDIT: And the one series of ads that surprised me a bit here was when I would defend some of our LGBQ members from hard core theists is that I would get ads for gay vacation spots. It did not bother me but it told me that Big Brother is not watching. Google is watching.

Why is it sexual immoral? If those that make it agree to do it, then nothing is wrong with it, I think. Obviously this is not always the case and that should be punished. Also I never really understood what the bad thing is about looking at those of opposite sex with lust? If men and women weren't interested in each other, we would have a hard time surviving. I sort of get the impression that when people see the word lust, they picture some sort of drooling man/women or something like that, which is completely out of control. But that is not the case, because everyone (unless they are lying) have looked at someone with lust at some point in their life... and what exactly happened?.... Nothing. So why that should be considered a sin is just another none sense religious idea, if you ask me.

And government should no ban it, it would be easier to get rid of money than porn. So if you ban it, it will just go under ground with no laws and no control. People that chooses to live making porn need to be able to contact police and get help as everyone else. If they are forced to do this in hiding, you would open up for a lot of bad things.

I have what is basically a porn picture as my phone wallpaper. No, I don't have a problem with porn and don't want the government interfering except in reasonable ways (like to keep minors out of it and when it's non-consensual). It's just sex and nudity. I have no idea why a deity that is supposed to have created humans, our bodies, biology and sex itself hates its own creations so much, at least according to his followers. It sounds like you're implying that God made a mistake and should've created us as sexless angels instead of physical beings with genitals.
