Prayers in Arabic

Elm Nehmara

Currently Muslim
I have a question.

What do you think about the prayers having to be in Arabic? As a non Arabic speaker I find it difficult to be able to do prayers in the Arabic language as I feel that not knowing the language makes it difficult to connect to God spiritually. Although I do think that it is rhythmic and meditative to do so however, I feel that God doesn't care what language you pray to him in.

Where in the Quran does it say that one must pray in Arabic?

It doesn't say anywhere in the Qur'an that you must pray in Arabic. IMO Allah understands all languages. I think the reason most scholars encourage Arabic is because all of the texts and such are in Arabic; some meaning is lost in translation.

All supplementary prayers are allowed in any language.

I do really appreciate what is happening in your mind about GOD and HIS system . You are right , language is irrelevant when the prayer is concern . Moreover there is a verse in Quran which might support your view . Here it is :

4:43 O ye who believe! Approach not prayers with a mind befogged, until ye can understand all that ye say,- nor in a state of ceremonial impurity, until after washing your whole body. If ye are ill, or on a journey, or one of you cometh from offices of nature, or ye have been in contact with women, and ye find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth, and rub therewith your faces and hands. For Allah doth blot out sins and forgive again and again.

Therefore if you don't understand Arabic , you must not pray in that language . You need to understand what you are saying in the prayer . And of course the ultimate purpose of prayer is to commemorate GOD only :

[20:14] "I am GOD; there is no other god beside Me. You shall worship Me alone, and observe the Prayer to remember Me.
Thanks.
