President Pelosi

Pelosi belongs where she is. Pence would be a less destructive and better option than Trump at this point.

If you were alive in the dark ages, you remember how we wound up with Gerald Ford as President. We had "nattering nabobs of negativism" VP Spiro T. Agnew and Nixon both gone. Of course in that case Nixon put Ford in as VP before he resigned.

But I believe the Senate might, just might, get rid of Trump but they won't touch Pence unless something really really ugly emerges.

No, he wouldn't. He is a Christian right extremist and has more political experience and clout than Trump. He would be less divisive to Republicans. Even Trump "joked" Pence would hang gays if he had the chance. I just hope that Trump doesn't keel over and croak just to keep Pence from being president.

We've experience fighting religious extremism and I would much rather fight Pence than Trump, who is a daily national embarrassment, constantly alienating allies, and setting up a corporate crony swamp which works to increase the wealth gap and a cultural trend of ignorance and bigotry even without the religious trappings. Trump is no better for the LGBT community, or anyone except the wealthy.

I don't care about Trump's reality show antics and his nonsense. I really don't care about what other countries think of us. But I do care if my government is going to make it harder for me to live. Pence would have it more together and would be more committed to wielding the government to bash women and LGBT people than Trump is. Trump has no real principles, but Pence does. They're just crazy principles.

I care about foreign relations because it does impact my life. Things like trade agreements for example, which drive market economy and Trump has royally ****ed. And the likelihood of succeeding in international projects such as climate initiatives, diplomatic initiatives, future conflict negotiation etc. The reality show antics do more than just cause eye rolling.

Besides, Trump has not been protecting LGBT from Pence or other evangelicals. Who do you think was involved in the trans military ban? Pence and his buddy Tony Perkins. The bulking of the religious freedoms commission? The same. Pence is already steering the anti-LGBT bus. Keeping Trump around won't help.

Pence would likely go after LGBT people even more and you admit that he's already influencing Trump on those issues. And it's not like those foreign policy issues will get better under Pence, from your perspective.

i agree with your assessment of Pence. But if it did happen President Pence would have less than one year before the election (perhaps only a few months) and he would have a Democrat house for all of that short time.

Again, what roadblocks has Trump set for Pence? He doesn't need to influence Trump, Trump's already said yes to his proposals.
At least he also won't bar journalists access to white house press conferences or create a cult of personality which has drawn all the right extremists from the woodwork. And yeah, Pence's foreign policy positions are 110% better than Trump's. Still not great, but better.

I'm not saying it won't be a fight. But it'll be a damn cleaner fight with better tools at our disposal than with Trump.
And, you know, considerably less criminal activity to be tempted to turn one's back on for fear of 'what might be worse.'

"Two major aspects would characterize Pence's foreign policy: a re-embrace of the Republican establishment and an aggressive uptake of Christian social conservative thought.

Among the Republican establishment, particularly the neoconservative wing, Pence has an impeccable reputation. Many describe him as a "hawk's hawk." He was a strong proponent of the Iraq War, has vigorously stood up for a strong military and "American values" and, as vice president, has taken on an informal role as an emissary to NATO and other alliances. All of this contrasts starkly to what candidate Trump said on the campaign trail.

Likewise, Pence's evangelical Christian faith is central to his identity. He has proudly built up a reputation as one of the most conservative lawmakers in the country and frequently describes himself as "a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order." There is a high probability that Pence would explicitly embed religious morals in U.S. foreign policy and push an activist social conservative agenda.

For example, as the governor of Indiana, Pence signed one of the strictest abortion provisions in the country and approved a controversial law intended to allow businesses to deny services to members of the LGBT community for religious reasons (only after intense blowback did he backtrack). Translated into the foreign policy realm, it is not hard to imagine Pence defending Christian minorities around the world, possibly to the exclusion of other religious groups.

He will undoubtedly continue Trump's expansion of the "global gag rule," and it is possible he may try to push a "clash of civilizations" strategy, primarily seeking alliances with countries that have a "Judeo-Christian" character."
What would US foreign policy look like under President Pence?

If you think that sounds better than Trump, we will have to agree to disagree.

Then we will have to agree to disagree, because the article both exaggerates what Pence would have the power to do and doesn't contrast it with Trump's disastrous corporatism and anti-empayhy, anti-aid, anti-immigration, anti-trade, pro nationalism, anti forign cooperation (unless for subterfugious reasons), etc etc etc. Once again, all with a culture of 'fake news, nothing bad about me is real and I won't talk to the press.' Making it all the more volatile.

Yes, we'll have to agree to disagree because some of the things you listed as negatives are things I either like or don't have much of a problem with. I like some of Trump's stances.
