My fellow Americans, on December 7th, 1941, a date which will live in infamy, the Japanese Nation attacked our forces in the Hawaiian Islands and other locations throughout the Pacific.

Americans need to understand that this attack is no worse than a small group of thugs exploding some firecrackers on a tugboat. There is no reason for me to ask Congress for a formal Declaration of War. There is no need to increase our armed forces or military equipment.

This Government, as promised, has maintained the closest surveillance of the Soviet construction work on the island of Cuba. Within the past week, some questionable evidence has appeared to show that a series of missile sites may be in preparation on that beautiful island. The purpose of this construction was clearly not an issue to me.

But I felt obliged to report this new development to you in fullest detail and to assure you that's it's a nothing burger and there's nothing to worry about. I've spoke when the Russian leader and he has put my mind at ease about the friendly and cooperative atmosphere between our two nations. What we've seen is a program to provide jobs to Cubans to help their economy and nothing more.

Neither is the fact that America has one of the highest per-capita death rates. Neither is the death of 190,000 Americans.

Just remain calm. The danger from these nightly bombings has been overplayed by the evil media. The effects of the bombings are not any more severe than falling into a mud puddle.
