Priestly pedophilia

Although I'm appalled at so much of what has taken place in church history, there is an assumption that priests are more likely to be pedophiles than other vocations. That simply isn't true. In fact, teachers are more likely to be pedophiles than priests.

"Catholic priests are more likely to be pedophiles than other groups of men.
This is just plain false. There's absolutely no evidence that priests are more likely to abuse children than are other groups of men. The use and abuse of children as objects for the sexual gratification of adults is epidemic in all classes, professions, religions, and ethnic communities across the globe, as figures on child pornography, incest, and child prostitution make abundantly clear. Pedophilia (the sexual abuse of a prepubescent child) among priests is extremely rare, affecting only 0.3% of the entire population of clergy. This figure, cited in the book Pedophiles and Priests by non-Catholic scholar, Philip Jenkins, is from the most comprehensive study to date, which found that only one out of 2,252 priests considered over a thirty-year period was afflicted with pedophilia."
9 Myths about Priestly Pedophilia

Anyhow, the evidence suggests it is less than 1% of priests that are pedophiles. Yet many people, including myself at times, almost consider the word "Catholic priest" to be synonymous with pedophile. This is simply far from true and unfair.

Also, the Catholic Church cannot be to blame for the pedophilia, because the priests took a vow of Chastity , and there's nothing in Catholic teaching that encourages priests to molest children.

In fact, the church has done much to address this issue, and such behavior is forbidden and condemned by the church... The church cannot babysit or control those who decide to rebel against Church teaching, violate their vows and Promises to the church, and to act on an impulse to abuse children.

Not making any excuses for the pedophiles, or minimizing the problem, just saying it's not fair to assume that priests are more likely to be pedophiles than other professions.

The real issue hasn't been the percentage of priests who are pedophiles, but rather the criminal reluctance of the Church to turn known child abusers over to the authorities.
Should the church be to blame for what some people in the hierarchy did?

I'm not in any way minimizing how disgusting that was... But I feel like the church gets blamed for it, when it was indeed the poor Judgment of a some Bishops, nothing in church teaching that contributed in any way to that behavior. The church teaching strictly condemn and forbid such things. Always has!

The church has also done a lot to correct this problem of abuses within the hierarchy.

I'm with ya here. Pedophiles are the worst in my book. They are far more damaging than any other kind of criminal.

My town has a pedophile epidemic as does much of rural America these days of late.
It goes largely unreported, all the warning signs are present and there is no end in sight.
Everything is dark now. Cowboy hats are a sign of danger.

The church is getting blamed for their mis-handling the problem.
Shuffling known pedophiles around providing them with fresh meat for hundreds of years is the fault of the church.

Paedophiles are disgusting enough but one in a position of trust is even more disgusting, the catholic church hasn't done enough to combat it.

This denial might be credible it it was coming from a non-Catholic source. But in as much as it isn't. . . . . . . . .

However, considering that the average number of priests in the world each year between 1970 and 2012 was 417,020, (source) and that 0.3% of them are pedophiles, the number of pedophile priests would be around 1,250. And this is necessarily low because we have no way of knowing how many total priests there were over the thirty-year period.

HOWEVER!
.
"The Pope was recently reported to have said that about 2% of Catholic clergy are paedophiles.
source
Which would put the number of current pedophile priests in the world at 8,340, and 740 in the USA alone (based on the 2015 population of 37,000 priests).

It's impossible to know because there were false accusations as well
Bogus Charges Against Priests Abound

There were a lot of people where I lived in Montana who came forth and accused priests that were already dead and couldn't defend
themselves... The church gave them lots of money without going to court or anything... Some people took advantage of making an easy buck .

There also have been people who have come forth and admitted that their accusations were false.

I have no idea how Philip Jenkins and the Pope gathered their data, but I strongly suspect it wasn't from accusations.

It wasn't just poor judgement by some bishops. There was long established Vatican rules actively preventing abuse being reported to civil authorities, which is why so many abusers were simply moved on to other diocese, often to go on to abuse again. It's worth noting that, last I read, Vatican rules still don't require church officials to report abuse accusations to the authorities.

I think another issue is an apparent failure of anyone in the church hierarchy to acknowledge the potential risks specific to the church and the clergy, notably the requirement for celibacy and the position of almost unquestioned authority priests had in society (and in some places, still do to some extent).

The church has also done a lot to correct this problem of abuses within the hierarchy.
Only when they really had to. There are definitely individuals within the church who really want to improve the situation (if only for the good name of the church) but there also seems to be some push-back too.
