UPDATE 1-Putin says Western sanctions are akin to declaration of war
Excerpted...
LONDON, March 5 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday that Western sanctions on Russia were akin to a declaration of war and warned that any attempt to impose a no-fly zone in Ukraine would be tantamount to entering the conflict.

Putin reiterated that his aims in Ukraine are to defend Russian speaking communities through the "demilitarisation and de-Nazification" of the country so that it became neutral.

Ukraine and Western countries have dismissed this as a baseless pretext for the invasion he launched on Feb. 24 and have imposed a sweeping range of sanctions aimed at isolating Moscow.

"These sanctions that are being imposed are akin to a declaration of war but thank God it has not come to that," Putin said, speaking to a group of women flight attendants at an Aeroflot training centre near Moscow.

He said any attempt by another power to impose a no-fly zone in Ukraine would be considered by Russia to be a step into the military conflict. NATO has rejected Kyiv's request for a no-fly zone, on the grounds it would escalate the war beyond Ukraine.

In the past, we've been sanctioned us for posting

thought anything I had to say in the OP would be
needless distraction from news that stands alone.

I happen to agree with this decision. If they did try a no-fly zone Putin would eventually violate it. And he would be able to do that on his own term and his own timing. And it would escalate the war.

I hereby move that the nation of RF immediately stop buying oil from Revoltingstan.

The sanctions are hurting like never before and it's only going to get worse for him, whatever he say's should be taken with a large pinch of salt.

RF desires our grease too much to do without.

I wish people would notice is Putin is staging.

Like he was staging outside the border, he's now staging in the interior under pretext of establishing a dmz.

Not establishing a no fly zone has just empowered the man to yet seize more territory to build up and strengthen once again for the next push further in.

The way the NATO talks about the situation is a little bit like the Ents from Lord of the Rings. They see a tragedy unfolding so they gather together and just sort of talk about it.
AKA appeasement.

A no fly zone enforced by who though, the UN can't and if Nato did it would definately be ww3,but i agree otherwise.

It's obviously political declaring a NFZ.

Let's hope the common sense of any hostile aircraft in enemy territory is to just shoot it down and not letting it complete its mission.

I'm seeing more that mere talk from
NATO, eg, Germany's military build-up.
BTW, the Ents did enter the war.

It's really impossible to do anything other than support and supply Ukraine, the sanctions on Russia are working but will take time.

Sanctions hardly stopped Germany, and did much to guarantee war with Japan..

And then the problem would be that we do not have enough conventional firepower there to beat Putin's forces back, so the next in line would be tactical nukes that they would have as an advantage there, and the next are the big-uns.:emojconfused: Do we really want that?

The sanctions should stand. Putin's full of crap. He can't stop sanctions with war.

The no-fly zone would be a bad idea, though. Fortunately, I don't think anyone is seriously considering it.
Agree. We can and should call Putin's bluff over pretending sanctions are an act of war. In fact we should carry on toughening them, to show we are not intimidated, while refraining from any inflammatory language that he could choose to misinterpret.

Political rhetoric in tense times like these can be an interesting study. Essentially, he's saying "The West is a bunch of poopyheads," but using the standard jargon. The standard loud talk when spoiling for a fight.
