Perhaps some people think, soil was mixed with water, kneaded, breathed into and Adam was made.
But It is not the case in Holy Quran.
The Reality
In fact, there were people before Adam, as the Holy Quran says:

[2:31] And when thy Lord said to the angels: ‘I am about to place a vicegerent in the earth,’ they said: ‘Wilt Thou place therein such as will cause disorder in it, and shed blood? — and we glorify Thee with Thy praise and extol Thy holiness.’ He answered: ‘I know what you know not.’

Explanation
خليفة (vicegerent) is derived from خلف which means he came after, stood in place of.
The word خليفة is used in 3 senses 1)-The one who comes after and stands in place of someone, 2)-Supreme religious head, 3)-A sovereign, king or ruler, .......also means......4)-One who precedes someone and is followed by him.

[2:32] And He taught Adam all the names, then He put the objects of these names before the angels and said: ‘Tell Me the names of these, if you are right.’

[2:33] They said: ‘Holy art Thou! No knowledge have we except what Thou hast taught us; surely, Thou art the All-Knowing, the Wise.’

[2:34] He said: ‘O Adam, tell them their names;’ and when he had told them their names, He said: ‘Did I not say to you, I know the secrets of the heavens and of the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you conceal?’

[2:35] And remember the time when We said to the angels: ‘Submit to Adam,’ and they all submitted. But Iblis did not. He refused and was too proud; and he was of the disbelievers.

[2:36] And We said: ‘O Adam, dwell thou and thy wife in the garden, and eat therefrom plentifully wherever you will, but approach not this tree, lest you be of the wrongdoers.’

[2:37] But Satan caused them both to slip by means of it and drove them out of the state in which they were. And We said: ‘Go forth; some of you are enemies of others, and for you there is an abode in the earth and a provision for a time.

[2:38] Then Adam learnt from his Lord certain words of prayer. So He turned towards him with mercy. Surely, He is Oft-Returning with compassion, and is Merciful.

[2:39] We said: ‘Go forth, all of you, from here. And if there comes to you guidance from Me, then whoso shall follow My guidance, on them shall come no fear, nor shall they grieve.’

Explanation
جميعا (all of you) shows there were many people.

[2:31]: [ mention, O, Muhammad ]When your Lord said to the angels, ‘Indeed I am going to set a viceroy on the earth,’ they said, ‘Will You set in it someone who will cause corruption in it and shed blood, while we celebrate Your praise and proclaim Your sanctity?’ He said, ‘Indeed I know what you do not know.’

Prophet Adam(a.s.) was the viceroy of Allah on earth. The saying of angles proves this: " while we celebrate Your praise and proclaim Your sanctity( so put us your viceroy ) ".

Brother Joseph, there are some Hadiths which proves there were some pre-human species before Prophet Adam.
But according to Qur'an and Hadiths, Adam was not evolved from them.

Tafsir al-Mizan, by AyatoAllah Tabatabai:
" Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) said: "The angels could not know what they said (Will You set in it someone who will cause corruption in it and shed blood), if they had not (earlier) seen someone who had made mischief in it and shed blood." (At-Tafsir, al-'Ayyashi)

The author says: This tradition may be pointing to an earlier creature that inhabited the earth before the mankind, as some other traditions say ".

There are Hadiths( traditions ) from infallible Imams which say that there were NasNas( human like creatures ) before Adam. Allah before the creation of Adam removed them from the earth and exterminated them( Bihār al-Anwār, V 11, Pg 103 ).

With respect, JS, if you really want help with this dilemma, why have you posted in an Islam only DIR? You're not going to get a balanced discussion if you restrict responses to those with a particular point of view.
