I was baptised Catholic within a couple of months of birth, but was never exposed to religion after that (other than the occasional wedding or Easter service). My mother's side of the family is all Roman Catholic. I'm not sure which protestant religion my father's side follows. My father is a follower of Eckankar. But enough about my family's background.
My wife is currently in RCIA classes, with the intention of being baptised during Easter vigil. I currently have no intention of being confirmed in the Catholic church, but am open to the possibility that I might at some point in the future.
My question is this: I know who my Godparents are. They live in Wisconsin, I'm in Texas. If I were to decide to fully join the Catholic church, I'd have to take RCIA classes, and I'd need a sponsor. My Godparents are officially my sponsor, right? I'm assuming that I'd need different sponsors for the process if my Godparents can't/won't make the trip(s) to Texas as needed. So, how do I deal with this if it should come to pass? Do I apologize to my Godparents and find someone else (most likely my wife)? Or do I resign myself to either travelling to Wisconsin for the rite or paying for them to come to Texas?
