Question about rlds

Done here.
The RLDS (formerly) and the Community of Christ (now) have always recognized the Book of Mormon as scripture. However, the RLDS/CoC has also had its own editions of the Book of Mormon, which differ in some ways from the LDS version. Grant McMurray, while President, didn't seem to believe that the Book of Mormon was factual, though, and many members of the CoC believe the Book of Mormon was written by Joseph Smith himself, and not translated from the writings of ancient Americans.

Interesting. I didn't know that. Is there a reason they came to that conclusion?

Since I'm not LDS or anything like that myself, it seems like the natural conclusion to me. But looking at it from an LDS perspective, I guess it is odd.

On their website they state:

"The scriptures provide divine guidance and inspired insight for life when responsibly interpreted and faithfully applied. With other Christians, we affirm the Bible as scripture for the church. In our tradition, the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants are additional scriptural witnesses of God’s love and Christ’s ministry."

I haven't heard or seen anything about them believing Joseph Smith wrote the Book of Mormon instead of translating it . However, there official site also says:

"Recognizing that the perception of truth is always qualified by human nature and experience, there is no official church creed that must be accepted by all members. However, through the years various statements, such as those listed below, have been developed to present the generally accepted beliefs of the church. All people are encouraged to study the scriptures, to participate in the life and mission of the church, and to examine their own experiences as they grow in understanding and response to the gospel of Jesus Christ."

So I guess it would be possible to be a member of the Community of Christ and believe that Joseph Smith wrote the Book of Mormon instead of translating it.

It looks to me, like the Community of Christ is becoming closer to protestant churches.
