Question for Muslims

Jesus(p) can forgive sins that were towards him for example: i can forgive someone if he ''sinned'' or miss-behaved towards me in the same way god can forgive sins towards him.

This is also true to Orthodox Judaism. If someone stole from me, and wants to repent, he can't ask forgiveness from G-d for this... He needs to ask me for forgiveness.

In islam you have to ask both forgiveness not only Allah(swt) or the person alone.

Do Muslims believe that Jesus can forgive sins?

The answers are found in the quran.

Every soul is a pledge for its own deeds; (74:38)
And each soul is paid in full for what it did. And He is Best Aware of what they do. (39:70)
This day no soul is wronged in aught; nor are ye requited aught save what ye used to do. (36:54)
And guard (yourselves) against a day when no soul will in aught avail another, nor will compensation be accepted from it, nor will intercession be of use to it; nor will they be helped. (2:123)
That Allah may repay each soul what it hath earned. Lo! Allah is swift at reckoning. (14:51)
This day is each soul requited that which it hath earned; no wrong (is done) this day. Lo! Allah is swift at reckoning. (40:17)

hello leonardo
shia muslims has a similar believe that prophets can ask god to forgive their real believers sins if sinner really be regretful of his or her act and dont try to do that sin again
we believe our prophet and 12 imams can forgive sins but the point i must emphasize is that we believe they do this by asking god, that means they cant do it themselve and only god will judge people but becoz of the altitude DIGNITY that they in have at god presence, may god forgive and accept the holy men request. but it have special situation and such as mentioned other guys if i sins to some one only he or she can forgive me

if i try to answer this question in islamic believes i think its more than a book and many books have been written about this simple question, but in short we have a challenge that so-called "intercession"
there are 5 kind of paradigm that convey the all aspect of the meaning of intercession
here are some evidences from Quran
1.Paradimes (ayyat) which condemn and deny intercession of anyone except god {(2:48,123,254) (6: 51,70) (32:4) (48:11) (39:44) (33:17), … }
2. ayyat which shows there would be intercession {(34:23) (78:38) (2:255) (10:3) (11:105) (53:26), … }
3. ayyat which shows who can do a intercession {(66:8) (4:64) (9:102,103) (43:86) (19:87) (20:109) (21:28), … }
4.ayyat which shows who can uses the intercession {(47:19) (40:7) (53:26) (34:23), … }
5.ayyat which show who can’t uses the intercession {(9:80) (10:27) (11:113) (13:33-34) (70:1-2) (26: 99-100), …}
So with this evidences; we can conclude can some one beside god do a intercession but that’s with god’s permission to them

Salam All,

Imams, Prophets (Jesus or Muhammad) wont ask forgiveness from Allah for Sinners, they have asked Hidayat for the Sinners but never asked forgiveness for anyone. Because, the will of God is the Will of Prophets, Imams and all respected holy personalities.

If some one committed sin, he/she should ask forgiveness directly from Allah as HE is the only one who can forgive the Sins, but only those sins which were towards him, if sins were committed to harm any human being, at the day of judgement sinner will have to ask forgiveness from that person, if he forgive him Allah will also, if he do not Allah wont.

I believe the first part of your post(highlighted in red) is incorrect.

Prophets did and will(on the day of judgement) ask forgiveness from Allah for Sinners. Please see the following quranic verse :
"And We did not send any messenger except to be obeyed by permission of Allah . And if, when they wronged themselves, they had come to you, [O Muhammad], and asked forgiveness of Allah and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah Accepting of repentance and Merciful." (Al Qur'an 4:64)

According to Tafsir Ibn Kathir, the above verse : "directs the sinners and evildoers, when they commit errors and mistakes, to come to the Messenger, so that they ask Allah for forgiveness in his presence and ask him to supplicate to Allah to forgive them. If they do this, Allah will forgive them and award them His mercy and pardon."
Taken From : Quran Surah (Sura) Nisa Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Arabic English, HTMl, PDF, with Recitation By Said Al Ghamdi MP3, Free Download

Also, from the Sahih Bukhari regarding the issue of intercession on the day of Judgement ... I will just quote the relevant part from Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 7, Number 331 :
"Narrated by Jabir bin 'Abdullah
The Prophet said, "I have been given five things which were not given to any one else before me. ...
4. I have been given the right of intercession (on the Day of Resurrection).
..."

However, the important point to remember is that Prophets can ask/intercede for forgiveness to Allah but the forgiveness is granted by Allah alone (not by the Prophets).

I believe what you have mentioned regarding the sin against another person is correct - need to ask forgiveness from both Allah and the person involved.

Allah knows best.

Salam Bhai,

I said wont ask, wont doesn't mean cant, they can but they wont because the will of Allah is the Will of Prophets. If some one committing shirk, Prophets wont ask forgiveness for him, they will ask hidayat for him. Obviously, they can ask Allah to forgive the mushrik, but they wont ask it.

So, keep committing the sins on this hope that Prophets will ask forgiveness on out behalf and we wont be punished is not the right idea.

Do Muslims believe that Jesus can forgive sins?

Everyone can forgive sins with the permission of God. Even you and I. To answer your question bluntly, yes he could, but not in the way you're thinking.

Let me give you an example. If you cut in front of me in line at a shopping center, I can choose to forgive you, that is how we including Jesus can forgive sins.

Question

In Quran verse 12:97-98, it is said:

They said, "O our father, ask for us forgiveness of our sins; indeed, we have been sinners."

He (Jacob) said, "I will ask forgiveness for you from my Lord. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."

Does this verse indicate that Prophets can and do ask for forgiveness?
Why Jacob did not tell them: "You must ask directly?"

I'm sure all prophets pray for forgiveness for themselves and for others.
I often ask my friends to pray for me as well as saying my own prayers, especially when I have specific things I want to ask for. I regularly ask others for prayers, as do all my friends.
I think it is a normal habit of believers.

Only God, the creator, can forgive sins. Not Jesus, not Muhammad, not Moses. The main theme of Islam is that we worship God alone and ask only God for help.

Yes,Christ can forgive sins.
Think back to when the paralyzed man was let down on a cot through the roof.
What did he do,and what did he say?.
In order for you to believe that the Son of Man has been given the authority by
his Father/God to forgive sins,I say your sins are forgiven,pick get up and walk.
Did he,or did he not afterwards do exactly that?.
These people were amazed.
If that´s not having God with you,I don´t know what does.
And if I´m correct,he even did it on the Sabbath.
What people really need to do is pick up a Bible,and pray to God through our
one mediator,Christ,through his Holy Spirit,to wipe the scales from your eyes
in order to see.
The sad part about it is,most people ned to see in order to believe.
Remember what Christ said to his then followers,You see,therefore you believe,
yet happy are those who believe,yet do not see.

Or think of the before and after of Saulas/Paul on his way to and from Damascus.
And Christ was not even on the Earth then.
