Question on the limitations of private colleges and corporations

The cake is a lie
A friend and I were discussing a gay student being kicked out of a private college, and this subject came up. I thought this might be a good place to ask, since most of you guys know a lot more than I do on such matters. :)

Is it legal for a private college to say "No blacks/Jews/whathaveyou"? What about corporations, such as Wal-Mart?

Do they just discourage anyone not black from going there or do they reject all non-black applicants? And thanks for the help :) I'm woefully ignorant on this subject.
