If Jammu is Hindu majority and Kashmir is Muslim majority, why not split it and give the Muslim side to Pakistan?

Also why did China claim Kashmir?

Land does not belong to any people of particular religious bent and practices but belongs to States. People should live in accordance with the dictats of the States they find themself in. If they do not like it they should leave and find another State that they feel comfortable with.

When Jammu and Kashmir became independent of the British Empire, it had the choice of independence, joining India, or joining Pakistan. The majority of the population wanted to be Pakistanis, since they were Muslims, while the Hindu minority and the Maharaja feared discrimination in a Muslim state. The Maharaja therefore opted for independence, but the Muslims rebelled and the Maharaja responded by joining India. Both India and Pakistan then sent in troops. Britain proposed a referendum, but Pakistan refused. The UN called for a referendum, but said that both sides must withdraw their troops first. Pakistan refused. The Commonwealth proposed to send in troops while a referendum was held and India refused. Basically, no-one was prepared to compromise. The Muslims object to living in a non-Muslim state and the Indians no doubt feel that giving in to religious demands could open up a can of worms in the rest of the country.

I thought the whole point of partition was because the Muslims wanted Shariah? Kashmir is Muslim majority while Jammu is Hindu- why not split it like Punjab and Bengal?

Human beings must learn to live with each other and not create divisions as there are much more important things to put one's mind on like how to grow enough food for everyone.

The problem is that India would not agree to that. They were obviously never happy with the partition in the first place, and a further partition would seem to be conceding the Muslim insistence on not living under non-Muslim rule. What about all the other Muslims in India? Personally, I'd say of the Kashmiris "give 'em to Pakistan and good riddance!" but what Indian politician would be prepared to face the political backlash to that?
