Someone here said the United States hand picked dictators in the Middle East so they can brutalize other Middle Eastern countries and hook us up with oil? Is this true? Could anyone simplify and clarify this?

The simple answer is that it's a complicated mess with a complex history. The US has been involved by, for example, overthrowing the socialist Iranian government but is far from taking the blame for everything. Those who assert that are anti-American not paying attention to the complex, messy history.

That just barely touches on the history. The Middle East conflict—a brief background is a better source which goes into how Britain and France took over because the Ottoman Empire supported Germany in WWI. It leaves out that Muslims and Jews have a very different view of the Temple Mount/Dome of the Rock so religion is part of the unholy mess.

We did support Saddam Hussein during the 1980's as a foil for Iran. Not a very smart move in the long run.
