Questions to nonautistics

Tagging @Guitar's Cry cuz he may be helpful. Im also tagging @firedragon in case he want to answer these which he may not. If he dont he dont have to. These may be hard questions to answer or they may not be. I just thought I'd ask them. I made a thread where folk can ask me about autism now nonautistic folk can answer me a few questions.

Which gives you more info? Looking in people's eyes or at their mouth? And if you look in people's eyes how do you get info on emotional state? Eyes do nothing for me in terms of informing me on emotional state. Following this line of thought can you really tell if someone might be lying though looking them in the eye? How? For me eye contact is painful and overwhelming. Makes me uncomfortable. But what is eye contact to you since from my understanding most don't experience that feeling when making eye contact?

Do y'all ever get underwhelmed regarding senses? I mean autistics get overwhelmed with sensory overload cuz they are hit with so much info. I can hear electricity which isn't typical. But most nonautistic folk without sensory processing issues(which can occur without autism) and without other disabilities hear so much less then us. They don't get as much input sensory wise in general either. So I wonder...is there such thing for y'all as a sensory underload? Kinda like how sometimes I need sensory input regarding things I'm hyposensitive to things such as proprioception? Or do y'all just be fine with your senses most the time no sensory underload or overload?

Communication. Why is it that so many nonautistic people make assumptions at times and read into things that arent directly said? Why is it some of y'all have a habit of saying things y'all don't mean? Why do so many nonautistic folk avoid direct straightforward communication and just don't say their thoughts at times when they could just make things easier by upfront communication?

Why do I have to say goodbye when I hang up the phone? Why can't I just be like ok and hang up? Apparently thats rude and I dont know why.

Can y'all hear dog whistles? I can but a nonautistic friend said thats impossible humans aren't supposed to hear them. I saw online some autistics can hear them so it's not just a me thing. Was my friend just messing can nonautistic folk not hear them?

Regarding food...this is an autistic experience that is common and apparently weird but I wonder if some folk nonautistic can relate so let me know. If I don't like a food or don't know what I want to eat I'll just not eat. It doesn't matter if I skipped a meal earlier that day or how hungry I am I literally cannot force myself to eat something I don't want to eat. If I do it takes a considerable amount of energy. Can y'all relate or no?

I have issues with proprioception. This is the sense that allows you to feel your body and where it is in space. It's the sense that allows you to close your eyes and touch your nose. I cannot tell usually where anything is located in my body without moving it or sitting in what others call uncomfortable positions but are very comfy to me. I feel most of the time like a floating brain. So. Describe this sense for me how you experience it. Can you really just tell where everything is located in your body without moving? If so whats it like? Does it ever get overwhelming your proprioception sense?

I may come up with more but I think that's a good starting point.

Honestly reading through all this makes me kind of wonder if I’m on the spectrum (on the “mild side”)
I doubt it, but I am socially….odd
I get overly emotional in movies/tv shows, not sure why. I’m not anywhere else.
I don’t understand typical social conventions, at least not intuitively like my friends and family do.

Though I don’t experience sensory overload (at least not when I’m sober lol.)

Agree with you on the food thing, though. I could be starving but I can’t force myself to eat something I dislike. Maybe in life or death scenarios I could. But otherwise, no thank you

Not all autistics have hyper or hypo sensitivities. It's not part of the criteria on the DSM-5 and while im not sure I don't think it's part of the criteria of the ICD-10.
They are just common in autism.

Fair enough.

I’m just saying, I have been asked more than once if I am on the spectrum. Not saying I am. I can’t say one way or the other without medical analysis obviously.

I think I’m just awkward though lol

That's possible. I don't know you well enough to make an assessment.

Hmmm... I'm also wondering if I'm autistic. I can't tell emotions from eyes, some peoples (and animals) eyes look sad to me but it's a permanent thing, it doesn't change with their emotions. I can kind of tell from the whole face and probably body posture but I'm not great at reading emotions. I'm also somewhat uncomfortable with eye contact but being hard of hearing I have to concentrate on the mouth to understand people.

I say hooroo on the phone, probably an Aussie thing.

Never even seen a dog whistle so I can't answer that one. I can hear electricity but only from the big high voltage overhead wires on towers.

I eat almost anything even if I'm not hungry so I can't relate to that one.

I have some problems with proprioception that's probably due to an ear problem, menier's disease.

That's a LOT of questions. A few thoughts:

Which gives you more info? Looking in people's eyes or at their mouth?

The eyes. But really dogs are much better communicators with their eyes because their communication is simple and direct.

And if you look in people's eyes how do you get info on emotional state?

AFAIK it's learned. Maybe these pictures will help:

Do y'all ever get underwhelmed regarding senses?

It's called sensory deprivation and yes people can feel the need for sensory input.

Communication. Why is it that so many nonautistic people make assumptions at times and read into things that arent directly said?

It's learned. People don't say what's truly on their mind but cover it up in various ways.

Why do I have to say goodbye when I hang up the phone? Why can't I just be like ok and hang up? Apparently thats rude and I dont know why.

This and other social rituals are learned and expected.

Can y'all hear dog whistles?

No

If I don't like a food or don't know what I want to eat I'll just not eat

I'm somewhat of a glutton so will eat when it's in front of me. Not everyone is the same.

Can you really just tell where everything is located in your body without moving?

Yes.

That's why I feel I'd probably be better off in Germany, where the language and people are blunt and upfront and literal.

I thought the one I got to use/hear was just broken.

I can hear electricity all the time in the house or outside the house like it's constant the sound is.

Lol. It probably wasn't. Based on what ive read on the wrong planet forum... An autistic was asking on there if other autistic folk could hear dog whistles.

I'm really curious to try another now, but I'm pretty much always around dogs so it's not often I'd feel comfortable using one.

Eye contact is important for me. But I also look at facial expressions and other body language. I have trust issues so I watch others like a hawk. In this way I can usually read another like a book and discern what they are actually communicating to me.

Mostly mouth.

Eye contact really doesn't tell me much other than what one is paying attention to. Eyebrows give me more info than the eyes themselves.

y'all ever get underwhelmed regarding senses? I mean autistics get overwhelmed with sensory overload cuz they are hit with so much info. I can hear electricity which isn't typical. I am not sure I understand what an underload would feel like.

Why do so many nonautistic folk avoid direct straightforward communication and just don't say their thoughts at times when they could just make things easier by upfront communication?

No idea. Many people just don't like being upfront, I guess?

Why do I have to say goodbye when I hang up the phone? Why can't I just be like ok and hang up? Apparently thats rude and I dont know why.

Because it feels like you are slamming the door in front of someone's face.

Can y'all hear dog whistles? I can but a nonautistic friend said thats impossible humans aren't supposed to hear them. I saw online some autistics can hear them so it's not just a me thing. Was my friend just messing can nonautistic folk not hear them?

No idea. Never been around one I think.

I can relate. I am a picky eater.

I have issues with proprioception. This is the sense that allows you to feel your body and where it is in space. It's the sense that allows you to close your eyes and touch your nose. How do you get to locate your body parts by moving?

Because it feels like you are slamming the door in front of someone's face.
But why? And why do we have to say hello at the beginning? What's wrong with a "ja" or "what?" or even "who's calling?" Why is that rude?
To me it seems like the odd obsession over eye contact. It takes a deal of effort to that, remembering to occasional blink and look away, make facial expressions, and make sure everything is matching, it's all exhausting.

It was that way for me for me when I was young. Didn't realize what that meant. My son Michael when he was young avoided eye contact, now he doesn't. I hope you'll get over that just as Michael and I did.

I can relate to that one! I have trouble understanding the social amenities. Why do people ask "How are you?". It seems so ritualistic.

It's okay, that's just how we're built.

It's mainly your expression and body language. I had such trouble reading those things when I was young, I still have trouble, but with some improvement. It does improve over time.

As to saying things people saying things they don't mean, sometimes it is a joke. I have trouble with that.
