Quotations

I did an assignment in English class, where we were supposed to pick out a quotation that symbolizes prejudice (spelling).

I chose this one:

I don't know that Atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.

Former President Geroge H. W. Bush

I, of course, raised some controversy, because atheism is still one of the "okay" to be discriminatory against qualities. (Atheists and homosexuals are pretty much the two biggest groups left that it is alright to discriminate against.)

Which is a quote that symbolizes intolerance or discrimination, etc.?

It would probably be cool to get people analyzing each other's quotes, and we might get a debate out of it.

well, if you look at the delcaration of independence, there is a quote saying, "Human race is bestowed with unalienable rights endowed by their Creator" or something along those lines, so it implies that there is a god. So you could say that this is one nation under god, maybe not Yahweh, or Jehovah, or whatever, but some higher power.

It means the people who wrote it believe that.

Do you believe that atheists can be citizens and/or patriots.

yes, of course, athiests can be citizens, and patriots. you dont have to be a bible-thumper to be a patriot. I was just providing some evidence that this country was founded 'under God'.

Are you talking about quotes that display predjudice knowingly or unknowingly? I've got several of both types! :)

"My notion of a wife at 40 is that a man should be able to change her, like a banknote, for two 20s." Warren Beatty, 1997

"Minorities, women, and the mentally-challenged are strongly advised to apply" - job announcement for the US Department of the Interior, National Biological Study

"It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians." Pat Roberston on the Equal Rights Amendment
