Quote of the day

"The human family is very diverse, with many different beliefs and cultures and ways of life. Many conflicts in our world are caused when people are intolerant of the ways that others see the world. Learning tolerance is an important cornerstone to creating a better world."

~ Robert Alan Silverstein

"Oh, the miraculous energy that flows between two people who care
enough to get beyond surfaces and games, who are willing to take
the risks of being totally open, of listening, of responding with
the whole heart. How much we can do for each other!"

~ Alex Noble

"The people who are unhappy when they are poor would be unhappy if they were rich, and they who are happy in a palace in Paris would be happy in a dug-out on the frontier of Dakota. There are as many unhappy rich people as there are unhappy poor people. Every heart knows its own bitterness and its own joy. Not that wealth and what it brings is not desirable—books, travel, leisure, comfort, the best food and clothing, agreeable companionship—but all these do not necessarily bring happiness and may coexist with the deepest wretchedness, while adversity and penury, exile and privation are not incompatible with the loftiest exaltation of the soul."

"Once you have found yourself and accepted your aloneness, then the greatest blessing is to share the love that arises within you. Each new moment presents the richest opportunity to be loving. And you can share love in the simplest of ways. Be soft and gentle. Be caring and kind. Be loving in an ordinary way, without any sense of wanting anything back, Life offers you the most precious gift. The gift of allowing you to be present and share love."

The essence of love and compassion is understanding, the ability to recognize
the physical, material, and psychological suffering of others, to put ourselves
"inside the skin" of the other. We "go inside" their body, feelings, and mental
formations, and witness for ourselves their suffering. Shallow observation
as an outsider is not enough to see their suffering. We must become one with
the subject of our observation. When we are in contact with another's suffering,
a feeling of compassion is born in us. Compassion means, literally, "to suffer with."

"If you will call your troubles experiences, and remember that every experience develops some latent force within you, you will grow vigorous and happy, however adverse your circumstances may seem to be."

"Children have a remarkable talent for not taking the adult world with the kind of respect that we are so confident it ought to be given. To the irritation of authority figures of all sorts, children expend considerable energy in “clowning around.” They refuse to appreciate the gravity of our monumental concerns, while we forget that if we were to become more like children our concerns might not be so monumental."

~ Conrad Hyers

"We flourish under the benefits of encouragement, praise, approval, and acceptance. If we live with encouragement - especially our own - we learn to be confident. If we live with self-praise, we learn to appreciate what's around us. If we coexist with self-approval, we're more likely to give ourselves - and others - a little slack."

"The real test of friendship is: Can you literally do nothing with the other person? Can you enjoy together those
moments of life that are utterly simple? They are the moments people look back on at the end of life and number
as their most sacred experiences."

~ Eugene Kennedy

"I believe that the first test of a truly great person is his or her humility. I do not mean by humility, doubt of his or her own powers. But really great people have a curious feeling that the greatness is not in them, but through them. And they see something divine in every other person."

~ John Ruskin

"Just as a writer learns the spontaneous freedom of expression only after years of often grueling study, and just as the simple grace of a dancer is achieved only with enormous, patient effort, so when you begin to understand where meditation will lead you, you will approach it as the greatest endeavor of your life, one that demands of you the deepest perseverance, enthusiasm, intelligence, and discipline."

~ Sogyal Rinpoche

"My days of whining and complaining about others have come to an end. Nothing is easier than fault-finding. All it will do is discolor my personality so that none will want to associate with me. That was my old life. No more."

"Nature always takes you at your own valuation. Believe you are the child of God—really believe it. Believe that you express Divine Life, Divine Truth, and Divine Love. Believe that Divine Wisdom guides you. Believe that God is your supply. Believe that God is helping and blessing humanity through you. Believe that you are a special enterprise on the part of God and that he is opening your way—and what you really believe, that you will demonstrate."

"People get into a heavy-duty sin and guilt trip, feeling that if things are going wrong, that means that they did something bad and they are being punished. That's not the idea at all. The idea of karma is that you continually get the teachings that you need to open your heart. To the degree that you didn't understand in the past how to stop protecting your soft spot, how to stop armoring your heart, you're given this gift of teachings in the form of your life, to give you everything you need to open further."

~ Pema Chodron

"As the imagination is set to look into the invisible and immaterial, it seems to attract something of their vitality; and though it can give nothing to the body to redeem it from years, it can give to the soul that freshness of youth in old age which is even more beautiful than youth in the young."

~ Henry Ward Beecher

Life Thoughts

"Life is meant to be fun, and fun is a sure antidote to disappointment. A million things have brought me joy, or laughter, or most important, the experience of beauty. Read. Plant a potato, and discover a treasure chest of new ones when you dig them. Walk down a northern path in the springtime, and try to count the dogwood blossoms and the trilliums. Read Shakespeare. Discover love. Then look up at the stars and reach for them."

~ Richard Cutler
