How often do you rate threads and why do you ?

If you don't rate threads what is a reason you don't?

I never have, probably because it seems as if only a tiny percentage of them ever are rated. I'd personally enjoy seeing them rated a lot more often.

I just rated this thread and lost my post. That's the last time I'll ever rate a thread. :)

Usually I'll give a thread a low rating if I hate it and noticed that someone else has given it a high rating. Sometimes I'll notice the rate thing and think about it and give the thread a rating. I usually don't rate them though since it isn't on my mind.

I am sure you really meant to say this would be the last time you rate this particular thread again. As opposed to rating threads in general:D

That's the spirt!!! If you can't smite the poster smite the thread!!

Not a problem. Go to the store buy some post its. Remove one. On it write the following

1) click on thread
2) read all posts on thread
3) frubal cool ones
4) evaluate thread overall
5) rate thread
6) post reply

In 7 days it should be a habit!!

To my recollection, I have only rated two or three threads.

If you don't rate threads what is a reason you don't?
1) I'm not in the habit of doing so. Maybe that Post-it suggestion would help. ;-)
2) I typically focus (and frubal) upon the quality of individual posts. Good posts can be found in marginal/casual threads, and it would be a shame to poorly rank a lackluster thread and have others possibly miss a quality post.
3) Threads with intriguing/original premised topics for discussion/debate are sometimes followed by lackluster or non-sequitur replies. Seems a shame to scuttle the ship just because a few stowaways have barfed on the poopdeck.
4) I lend minimal credence to any ranking/rating system that is purely subjective, and prone to personal bias or "fixing" (as testified within this thread). I would consider thread ratings of greater value and direction if the ratings were determined by the mod staff alone (bias might still play a role, but perhaps less so - besides, who knows better what best represents the ideals and intent of any given forum than the forum mods themselves?).
5) In the vein of #4, I would simply add that one man's bounty is another man's bane, therefore...de gustibus non est disputandum.

Just the same, I'll strive to make better account of myself as a REF supporter, and do my best to lend objective ratings to all threads I read in the future (know that I am often a harsh critic, a tough laugh, and a stickler for candor in reply and provided valid support of premised argument/rebuttal in debate. Be careful what you wish for. ;-))

s2a you are overthinking it. Joking aside, rating as a practical function on here. It lets the posters know as a community how well threads are recieved and kinda gives, espically the newer posters a general feel about the posting culture here.

I personally feel that thread rating is one of the larger potential assets of this site that is not being utilized to a sufficient potential.

MIchel I was kidding about the post it but, as a poster myself I would, if more people used the feature, look at thread ratings to see, from a macro-standpoint how the collective group generally feels about issues. I vote alot of threads and think I am probably one of less than 5 posters that does.

That's a very good point Rob; like the one I encountered when I first joined. I posted on the Site feedback a question about the 'Buddy list' - that I was fast running out of space; everyone replied that they had never used it.;)
